(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 02:18 am (UTC)(link)It's more that I feel like the problems get massively exaggerated by people to support other arguments that they want to make, or people who have axes that they want to grind. And also that there's a lot of nostalgia for how fandom was "back in the day" that's unrealistic. And it bums me out when it feels like people are using it as a weapon against other fans.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 06:24 am (UTC)(link)I'll definitely agree with your points here, yeah. I have many fond memories from my early/younger days in fandom, sure, but if I stop and think about it long enough, I could easily recall a few not-so-great memories and moments from those fandoms as well. You're absolutely right that nostalgia has its downside.
I also think you're right that a lot of fandom arguments and problems boil down to a "x said, y said" type of scenario, too. Context, bias, stuff like that-a lot of people forget to take things like that into account, too.
Also, I know there's drama in a lot of my fandoms. I've heard about it, I've come across it. But I've also worked to try and forge my own little corner where I can stay away from as much of it as possible, and I think that helps make it easier for me to see my fandom in a better light as a result. Trying to find a drama-free space can be easier said than done sometimes, true, and people shouldn't have to feel like the only way they can enjoy a fandom is if they leave the fandom space itself.
At the same time, I feel like staying in fandom spaces one knows are drama-laden can skew their view of the fandom and make it seem like it's worse than it really is. Stepping away, even if only briefly, can sometimes help put one's negative view of a fandom in perspective, too.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-04 02:45 am (UTC)(link)There was plenty of fighting and wank, but I never even heard of doxxing before say, 2012. Now being doxxed is something you constantly hear happening to people.
