I like your picture choice for this secret, OP :D.

And I fully agree. In some ways, I'm kinda glad that most of my teen years were internet-free, and when I did get internet, it was well before all the social media stuff started popping up, and I think many of the sites I used to hang out on back then don't even exist anymore. So if anyone wanted to find any stupid stuff I said back then they'd have to REALLY dig for it :p.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Me too! On all counts.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I definitely worry more about posting fic since I'm adjacent to a wanking megafandom. My fic's not even kinky. It really sucks the fun out of fandom. I admire people who can still post whatever floats their boat.

I do wish I'd taken more advantage of fandom when I started out. Now, everything seems much harder.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I've actually gotten more problematic as I've aged - and less likely to give a shit if people don't like it.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I disagree, but there's really no way for me to express that without being accused of jumping down your throat, so

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP, but I'd be genuinely curious to read your reasons why you disagree :).

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ehhhhh, I don't know. "Disagree" might not even be the right word. If that's their experience, it's their experience. And it would be ridiculous to say that fandom doesn't have problems.

It's more that I feel like the problems get massively exaggerated by people to support other arguments that they want to make, or people who have axes that they want to grind. And also that there's a lot of nostalgia for how fandom was "back in the day" that's unrealistic. And it bums me out when it feels like people are using it as a weapon against other fans.

AYRT

I'll definitely agree with your points here, yeah. I have many fond memories from my early/younger days in fandom, sure, but if I stop and think about it long enough, I could easily recall a few not-so-great memories and moments from those fandoms as well. You're absolutely right that nostalgia has its downside.

I also think you're right that a lot of fandom arguments and problems boil down to a "x said, y said" type of scenario, too. Context, bias, stuff like that-a lot of people forget to take things like that into account, too.

Also, I know there's drama in a lot of my fandoms. I've heard about it, I've come across it. But I've also worked to try and forge my own little corner where I can stay away from as much of it as possible, and I think that helps make it easier for me to see my fandom in a better light as a result. Trying to find a drama-free space can be easier said than done sometimes, true, and people shouldn't have to feel like the only way they can enjoy a fandom is if they leave the fandom space itself.

At the same time, I feel like staying in fandom spaces one knows are drama-laden can skew their view of the fandom and make it seem like it's worse than it really is. Stepping away, even if only briefly, can sometimes help put one's negative view of a fandom in perspective, too.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-04 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
DA. It wasn't that they were drama free, it's that there's a more predatory edge to fandom now. It's a mix of mean girl bullying tactics cloaked in misleading social justice language, or people who actually believe their extremely bastardized version of social justice and act like cult leaders.

There was plenty of fighting and wank, but I never even heard of doxxing before say, 2012. Now being doxxed is something you constantly hear happening to people.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Gd people, it's not that bad for the average fan.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's also really hard to quantify whether it's worse, and how much worse, than it used to be

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'll agree with this, too. I think the internet and social media have certainly amplified some nasty aspects of fandom culture that might've been easier to avoid back in the day, but yeah. I've no doubt there are horror stories out there from the pre-internet days of fandom that would be just as bad as what you hear about now.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably depends on the fandom, really. Sorting and filtering through the toxicity can be more of a challenge in some fandoms and platforms than others.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
But that implies that the problem is with the structure of the internet, rather than with individual fans becoming more evil, or with their political ideologies

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Porque no los dos?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Occam's Razor, I suppose

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it contradicts Occam's Razor to suggest that it's likely a combination of factors.

Every attempt to cite Occam's Razor I have seen in a fandom context makes me repeat to myself "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". Almost never seen it referenced correctly and that includes your comment.

The move from walled gardens of forums to big social media where searching for tags is the primary means of finding people creates a situation where everyone is up each other's ass.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Srsly.

I see more people whine about how new fandom culture is terrible (both here AND on my dash and twitter, etc) than I see the actual terrible fandom culture.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
... and the conclusion you reach is not, "I've been very fortunate" or "Other people might not have the exact same fandom experiences that I do" but "I didn't see it so it's not real"?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that sounds about right. It's also why racism and sexism don't actually exist unless they've happened to me personally.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
The picture is adorable, OP. :D

And yeah, fandom has definitely gotten more hateful and witch-hunty lately. I tend to keep to my corner, although I do still post fic. (And the 'problematic' fic I post is under a sockpuppet.) If people give me shit, I just ignore them. I do as I please.
