But you need snappy alliteration and a good flow. "Sailor soldier" sounds weirdly redundant, no?

Sailor Soldier is fine. I also like Sailor Warrior, but I realize that's too many syllables for the anime.

The new translation from Japan is Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, which I don't understand at all.

"Sailor Soldier" sounds kinda dumb to me. And "Sailor Warrior" sounds really full of itself and sets the wrong tone. The original was also intended to be cutesy, so I think "Sailor Scout" was definitely a good choice. But agree to disagree!

To the old fandom's credit, that's really not the connotation the word scout has in modern English. I think the chance of whether DiC chose it because of the "soldier" meaning or because of the Girl Scouts is about 50/50, but the fact is that kids and teens watching the Sailor Moon dub would only associate it with the latter.

Connotation in modern English? But we still use the word scout in the military? What else would "scout" mean? It doesn't have another meaning, the Girl Scouts took their name from that word.

I don't disagree that "Scout" was probably chosen because it sounds cuter than "soldier", which is due to Girl Scouts. But even so, the word does have a meaning, and cuteness was certainly intended in the original, too.

I used to watch the subs exclusively, but I did also use the word 'Scouts' because it felt kind of weebish to say, "NO, it's SENSHI," when you were talking to someone in English, like, throwing a random other-language word into a conversation when there's a perfectly good translation.

But "scout" has always been a military term, lol.

I get that, in some of those older children's dubs, there can be pretty significant narrative difference between the Japanese and English audio tracks. So fair enough, being a fan of one exclusively. It still seems weird, though, especially since most of the fans probably watched it on TV in English so that's the one they grew up loving.

Never saw Sailor Moon, but I loved English Digimon. Even though I know some stuff got cut/reworked, that's where my nostalgia is.

I have no idea what translators meant in that case but seconding that. Add to the fact that scouts used to be under military during and after WW2 (at least in Europe) and only decentralised around 70s (maybe not all countries, Polish did around 1969). However, when show was made - it made no sense to use 'scout' so we had 'mages' (show was called 'Mage from the Moon' xD).

Not in most of Europe they didn't (and certainly not in the West). Baden-Powell may have been an ex-soldier, but he set up the Scouts and Guides as explicitly non-military youth organisations, and they remained that way in most countries (unless they were banned, which they were by the Nazis and in most of the Eastern bloc - Poland was unusual in creating a Scouting-Pioneer fusion).

I mean, I agree that the word has military connotations (so does Guides, but very few people remember that because it's a now-obscure reference to a unit of the British Indian Army), but what happened with Polish Scouting is not typical of the movement.

That is quite interesting and I assumed it stayed military akin to USSR and Nazi Germany (as they did ban those but Hitler Jungen worked under similar premises as in Poland and people are still treated as if they were in military when they were forced to join those). I do know UK did not have similar ones but not sure on France. Also, must look into that more as was convinced Scouts and Pioneers were one and the same in most places just differed by name? However, yep - not enough info.

Eh, I almost exclusively use sub terms but idgaf if someone drops a dub term. I'm way more offended by all the censorship done back then :P (though I'm happy the show made it to North America in some form, and I know it could have been much. much. worse).

This is one of the reasons I've stayed away from the fandoms for the anime I like. I watched a lot of it dubbed and that's how I think of the characters. But I know that's not the 'real' version since it was Japanese first.

And I also feel really out of my depth whenever I try to read fic for the anime I like because there are all these terms I don't know that everyone else seems to. Watching the show seems simple. When I watch other shows, that's all I need to know to participate in making fanworks but not so with anime.

Most anime fandoms these days don't care whether you watch it subbed or dubbed. They'd probably even explain the terms to you if you say "I've only seen the dub, what does x mean?" Lots of people in anime fandoms like dubs too and will watch both versions to compare them for fun.

It's not just what the terms mean. It's how they are incorporated into the fic and the character. If it was just a translation, that's not hard. But it's not just that.

I love the hell out of Sailor Moon and I appreciate the new, uncensored dub, but sometimes I watch the old dub for the heck of it. She'll always be Serena to me though.

It amuses me to see other versions of 'Sailor Moon' as Polish was ... interesting - we had bits from French translation, some English, some directly and weirdly translated from Japanese. We did not use anything from Northern American version unless I never noticed but no lesbians, crossdressers, gay men or whomever else were harmed (and that is hilarious for Poland). We did have trouble with Mamoru's age though and it ... varied - the first version of first season had him as 23 or 25 while booklet connected claimed 18. People who never bought additional stuff were under the impression he was older BUT main characters also got aged up to 16. Reason? It is uncommon for Polish students to work as no time for that thus Mamoru and his job plus living alone made no sense, same as main characters starting middle school (we had only primary and middle back then) at 14 (for us - 16).

It is fun to learn quirks of other translations. Still not as funny as Yu-Gi-Oh which I never seen but heard it .... cut most of the plot and Polish followed American thus making it a show for little kids. I was shocked it was quiiiiteeeee different...

Nope and it is funnily the only film I could not see as the translation was broken - had left audio in one language and right audio in another (German and English) plus Italian subtitles. Icon is of a model - Bartek Borowiec.

wow, that's so interesting to know. and kinda funny since in russian dub they were moon warriors (воины луны) if I remember correctly, which is not only cool as heck but also an accurate translation.

tbh, the German dub is the way to go! They were given great voices. I like the Japanese original too, which I only watched for the first time a couple of years ago, but the German one will always have a special place in my heart <3
