I think it's upsetting that once again the fandom is trashing the female Asian character.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Nooooooooooooope. Nope nope nope. Get thee behind me.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-19 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think they're trashing Nagini so much as a character as much as... just the concept of an Asian woman turning into an animal and being the pet of Wizard!Hitler basically. The concept ...kinda leaves a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-19 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, this. OP is either missed the point or they're trolling.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
And people defended trashing Rose because they said she was poorly written.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Do you think that the quality and nature of those arguments is comparable

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
There are definitely people in this scenario who are conflating saying that the character was poorly written with "trashing Rose", though. To be clear, criticism of how a character is written isn't the same thing as hate.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah pretty much this. If this was a character completely different than Voldemort’s pet snake, I doubt people would be as upset as they are. As it stands, i think it’s understandable why some people are upset.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-19 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on, it's not because she's a female Asian, and you know it. HP "fandom" is notoriously eager to hate on absolutely everything.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-19 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
ffs it's not because she's Asian or female, it's because it's a riduculously bad plot device shoehorned into existing lore for god knows what reason

like I'm sorry if it hurts because the only actors you can identify with are in roles that get shit, but at least take a moment to understand that in Nagini's case it's not because of gender or ethnicity but JKR's stupid, clumsy concept. demand better roles!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-19 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn't existing lore unless there was previous lore that said Nagini was ONLY a snake? If so, I missed it.

They didn't say it contradicted existing lore they said it was shoehorned in. And I think that's a reasonable thing to day. Even though nothing explicit in the text contradicts it, no reasonable reader would have said that the text indicated that Nagini was a human being.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-19 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure the original series said she was a viper Voldemort found in Albania, but I suppose you could twist that around to mean that she was ALSO a human woman that he decided to enslave if you want to. It's kind of stupid, but not any dumber than saying that Dobby was secretly in league with Grindelwald or that Buckbeak was transfigured from a piece of toast.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
That's just speculation, we don't know how Voldemort found Nagini.

And Voldemort treated Nagini better than everyone else, she wasn't his slave. Dumbledore said he cared about her as much as he cared about anything.

Smells like a troll secret.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
At least they could wait until AFTER the movie is out?

Or maybe not, this way it's clear it's just racism + misogyny. They're literally judging the character based on the poster and a one line blurb.

I disagree with the comments saying it has nothing to do with her being a female Asian character. I think it has a lot to do with it actually, but the difference is that the criticism is focusing on a potentially problematic representation of a female Asian character, whereas the criticism of Rose was ostensibly about the "bad writing" and really about the fact that she was a female Asian character.

That is, I think think the criticism of Rose was at least partly fueled by racism on the part of the complaining viewers, whereas the criticism of Nagini is fueled by a concern about (perceived/suspected) racism on the part of the creators/writers. If that makes sense.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
this is a good point to make!

"...whereas the criticism of Rose was ostensibly about the "bad writing" and really about the fact that she was a female Asian character."

Meh. I'm female and Asian. I was happy to see an Asian woman in a prominent role, but she definitely could've been a lot better written. The same could be said of most of the female characters in the new Star Wars movies. There just isn't time for much character development in these blockbuster films.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, trust me - I agree. The writing is bad. Bad writing alone doesn't explain the disproportionate hate her character got and the abuse the actress got, which is much more than that received by other female characters, who with the exception of Leia, are much more hated than the arguably equally underdeveloped male characters.

It's rather telling that Isaac and Dern did not get comparable levels of harassment for reading a bad Caine Mutiny in Space script.
