It starts that way but changes over time. I think it's almost 50/50 now. Also the members of the crew change, too. You should give it a chance. It's a fun, quirky show.

1. The cast changes a lot over the seasons.
2. That is pretty standard in the DC universe: Batman and Batgirl, Superman and Supergirl, Aquaman and Aquagirl. Hawkgirl was introduced in 1940, so there's a fair amount of history attached to the name.

Skip the first season - it was, er, not the best. But the “crazy Hawk flying chicken people” (Mick Rory) left at the end of that season, and the second season on is pure unabashed crazy, and I love it. It’s my favorite show on TV right now. And for the current season, the female regular cast outnumbers the male by six to four, seven to four if you count Gideon’s voice actor.

Maybe watch the last episode of the season? Or at least get spoiled on how it ends because there's fallout. They embrace the cheesiness of the show after that. One of the character spend a good deal of season 2 grieving over what happened in season 1 and it was fantastic.

That the other thing is they don't shy away from their characters having to deal with trauma. There are emotional consequences and the characters don't always deal with those in healthy productive ways, but then have each other for support.

Please get past S1. Season 2 picks up and starts to hit it's stride and season 3 is just wonderful.

Stick with it. The cast becomes more diverse in future seasons, and the Hawkmates are only in season one. Plus there's a load of LGBT actors and characters. It's fantastic.
