Finally watching it. It's...okay. Not great. Pretty cheesy in moments, and the kneejerk of having fat, grumpy aliens and/or fat, 'cute' aliens (or, non-human characters) is really getting old.

Not sure what the huge hate-on for the Rose character came from. She's adorable and fun and knows what she's doing. WTF is wrong with people?

I loved TLJ. I get that opinions are going to differ, but I honestly don't get why Rose gets so much hate.

Right? WTF.

Basically - she's not a thin, big-boobed 'Oriental' hottie, she's a little plain and a little heavy and so...she doesn't 'count' as a good addition to the 'verse.

And she stopped Finn's "heroic sacrifice" even though the movie made it clear that his death wouldn't have done anything to the weapon. And honestly, that hate seems to come from actual Finn haters who seem at least a bit racist and who outright say that the "heroic sacrifice" thing was the first time they liked Finn.

Anyway, yes, I think there are reasonable fans who just dislike her for some reason I can't fathom. But a lot of it is rooted in sexism and racism and just determination to dislike the new movies.

Pretty much. I looked her up and read an article about her being harassed online to the point of deleting her social media, and *in the comments* was so much hate and 'oh, this isn't real, this is made up' crap....
JAYZUS.

I kind of hate most of humankind right now. We are just so fucking ugly anymore.

To play devil's advocate, I don't think it was all that clear attacking the weapon wouldn't have done something. The first time I saw it, I expected that he would attack it and stop that particular threat.

I think part of it is that his arc did seem to be moving to embracing the Rebellion and here he is ready to sacrifice for it, which often leads to actual sacrifice. Him not sacrificing himself is another of Rian's subversions, but it only works because it is subverting a common trope.

I'm glad he didn't die but I do think the execution of what Rian was trying to do there wasn't well done or obvious.

That said, I do agree that some of the people making the argument aren't doing so in good faith and do hate Finn.

My understanding is the Rose-hate is mostly shipping related. People who wanted Finn/Rey are upset that her presence can get in the way of that. Also, general racism too.

On the less batshit crazy side, a lot of people thought the kiss was awkward. And the Canto Bight subplot is one area that many people did not like for slowing down the movie and since she was a part of that, that's another reason people didn't warm to her.

I admit, them running off to some random planet in the middle of a slo-mo death march is weird ,but honestly - Star Wars has been doing that kind of stupid stuff forever.

Racism tops my list of 'why people hated her'. That and she wasn't the Asian equivalent of the bad-ass bitch with long hair big boobs.

Yeah, there are people wishing that her sister had been cast as Rose instead because she was supposedly a better actress - her sister being played by a much more conventionally attractive actress but who actually had no lines in the movie.

I think racism is a huge component but I don't think you can underestimate how big shipping is either. The Reylo/anti-Reylo thing has made the Sequel Trilogy part of SW pretty much a no-go for many fans.

I have never understood that kind of rabid shipping nonsense. I mean - sure, i have my 'druthers for who should be with who, but i would never get up in the *actor's* face about it, and it's a fucking MOVIE - good lord, ship who you like!

I think the ...um...the guy half of Reylo is an unattractive actor and a shitty, shitty character (for so many reasons - just how many temper tantrums must i witness?) but again - screaming hate at Rose/the actor isn't gonna change the damn movie.

IMO the kiss was awkward, and I have ships in this game. I'm not sure if it was a chemistry issue or crappy direction or both,but I thought it lacked the passion that the moment was clearly calling for.

No, I agree. I thought it was awkward too.

I mean, she probably had a concussion given that she immediately passed out afterwards.

I liked it. Don't think it's amazing, but don't get the hate. Rose 3cool,but I'd like to see more of her and the romance was emotionally lacking and underdeveloped, but that's Star Wars for you.

Just to be clear, my issue is with the writing, not the actors. Because I swear, people also get shirty if you say anything less than positive about Rose.

The writing in Star Wars was never *stellar*, and it's gone downhill for years. It's so cliche and repetitive. I'm literally so un-invested in the 'verse anymore, and I'm pretty sure I missed a movie somewhere..... I thought Finn and Rey were cute, but Rose and Finn are cute, too, so...works for me!

Both pairings would be cute. Ditto Poe/Finn. I'm just not a person who gets all diehard about shipping. They're fun movies, but I wish the writing was a little better.

I liked TLJ. I liked Rose, too. I think the issue with her was just plain old racism (she's not white) and misogyny (she's not a stick thin womam). But yeah, Leia Poppins was ridiculous, and I hate how they made Hux comedy relief. I like Crylo Ren tho, ha.

Yup, i think so, too. Plus, she wans't a conventional 'hottie', so that made all the fanboys mad 'cause they didn't want to fap to her.

It's all pretty damn weird, honestly, and fucking *slow* - what a boring movie, 95 percent of the time.

I liked Rose, but I disliked that she was sent off with Finn to lead the B-plot and leave Kylo Ren in the spotlight with Rey. I mean, I like Rey too, I just hate Kylo and Reylo. For awhile, I worried that the amount of hate Rose’s actress was getting would mean they’d kill her off in the next movie, but it sounds like at least Disney’s not gonna give the fuckers the satisfaction.

I do think the hate she got was partially racism and partially pissed off FinnRey shippers. I don’t really ship anything in the new trilogy unless Hux/blaster bolt or Kylo Ren/laser cannon count, but I’d be fine with any combo of Finn, Rey, Rose, and Poe, from platonic buddies all the way round to frolicking foursome.

And it’s probably my hatred of Kylo Ren talking, but it did seem like Finn was made into a bit of a buffoon, Poe into a hothead, and Rey into a lost little girl in TLJ to make Kylo look better by comparison. Spoiler: he looked worse. Never getting over “you’re nothing, but not to me.” I’d take “you’re not like sand” over that. Hearing it praised as romantic makes me feel like I’m in bizarroworld.

Regarding Rose, other anons are right that it's mostly racism and sexism. In some particular vile parts of fandom, the hate for her comes from shippers who accuse her of being anti-black.

shippers who accuse her of being anti-black. Bzuh? Why? Her character’s paired with Finn! I mean, I disliked the way Finn was made to be a bit of a bumbler in TLJ, but that’s not the actress’ fault!

But she tased him, so Rose is anti-black. Which is a ridiculous argument considering Finn and Rey first met in a similar way (Rey chases him down, hits him, accuses him of theft), therefore Rey must be anti-black as well but I have yet to see any of these anti-Rose people accuse Rey of such a thing.

I'm so glad i'm not actually in the fandom. Gah.

But don't you see how Rose is physically and emotionally abusive to Finn? She tased him (violence is never funny!!), lost her cool with Finn in the novelization, and dared to stop his heroic sacrifice with brutish action. /s
