Another tmass shooting

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This time in Pittsburgh.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/27/us/active-shooter-pittsburgh-synagogue-shooting.html

11 dead and the shooting is being investigated as a hate crime. Which I guess is a step up from labeling him as simply a whako. And yes, the shooter is another middle-aged white guy.

It's tragic and fucked up

I am gonna cry laugh when Nov 7th rolls around, Republicans win all their races, and we find out that young people didn't vote again. Honestly, at that point I hope they get fucked over by Republicans.

I'd say young voters are a lesser problem compared to whatever's happening with voting machines: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2018/10/23/georgia-naacp-filed-complaint-voting-errors-some-counties/1741406002/

This is tricky, and we have to be really fucking careful here, because there's a lot of things that are overt attempts at voter suppression, and there are technical issues with voting machines that are merely technical issues, and it's really important to try to understand and maintain that distinction. It's really easy to jump to the conclusion that the voting machines are rigged and I don't think that the evidence supports that idea.

Why don't you go and get fucked over by Putin, russian troll.

Honestly, the Republican party is so into disenfranchisement of minority groups and discouraging liberals from voting and generally being all “work hard to prove you deserve to vote” that I’m surprised turnout isn’t lower.

I’ve only missed one election since I was able to vote—although my first couple ballots may not have been counted since no one explained the extra steps I’d have to take after casting a provisional ballot, and I still see misinformation going around about that stuff today.

I think either automatic universal suffrage for every US citizen over 18, or making voting mandatory for every US citizen over 18 would stop a lot of the fuckery being pulled by Republicans. Doing away with/criminalizing ridiculous barriers like that one majority Hispanic town where the only polling place is a) outside city limits and b) a mile from the nearest bus stop would help too.

Do I get frustrated with individual people not voting? Sure. Am I gonna blame them more than politicians who have literally said they won’t win if everyone is able to vote? Fuck no.

Fully agreed on all of this. I hope, whenever the Democrats do regain power, they can fix all those issues.

Re: Another tmass shooting

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's slightly tricky to do so, because most of this stuff is administered at the state level.

Wow, fuck off anon.

Re: Another tmass shooting

Been a hell of a week news-wise, hasn't it?

And of course the party that's currently inspiring these shitheads will do absolutely nothing about this or tone down their rhetoric.

Trump's response was to (1) blame the victims for not having armed guards posted and (2) make jokes about having a bad hair day. Trump was endorsing the false flag theory for the bomber. Trump, like, a week ago was praising a congressman for beating up a journalist.

I don't see how anyone who claims to be a reasonable or moral person can support him at all. It's impossible.

Re: Another tmass shooting

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, the ol' "If they'd just had an armed guard" excuse. Cops were shot when trying to respond, so what the hell he thinks an armed security guard would've achieved in that situation, I truly don't know.

But yeah. He's an absolute scumbag with a truly dangerous rhetoric and he can fuck off forever. This is why I refuse to believe Trump supporters' claim that they voted for him because of "economic issues". It was a bullshit excuse when they voted for him and it's even more of one now. They wanted Trump, they enabled him, they encouraged him, they get to own the fallout.

I know that people say the Democrats taking the Senate is a long shot right now, but if they manage to do so, they absolutely need to kick him out of office first chance they get. I do not want Trump to still be here in 2020 and get a chance to run for another term.

Re: Another tmass shooting

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
They need 66 votes in the Senate to expel Trump. If they win every Senate race, they'll have 59.

Re: Another tmass shooting

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh, okay. Damn.

Maybe they could do that whole 25th Amendment thing that people have talked about before, then?

Re: Another tmass shooting

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
25th requires the VP to go along with it (and also cabinet heads, but that's easier to get around).

Basically, it comes down to, you can't get rid of him without the cooperation of Republicans until 2020. And Republicans probably won't cooperate as long as the base supports him.

Re: Another tmass shooting

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
So it would have to be an 'Order 66' from the Senate?

I lol'd but damn was it bitter

Funny how they never mention where they’re supposed to find these hypothetical guards, how to pay for their training/weapons/salaries...
