(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)And Rowling always did attract a *very* devoted fanbase - iirc, it wasn't particularly unusual for people to refer to being Jo's Army etc., or for her to respond to minor disagreements (I remember when she wrote a post about weight, which came across as very well-meaning, but
also kind of stereotypical, so it was kind of 'Girls be bitchy, calling each other fat, even when they're not; whereas boys are just innocently befuddled by all this fixation on appearances'. Some tabloid called her out on how her books tend to make fun of fat people, and she wrote some big rebuttal on her website about how 'I'm not allowed to write X and Y'.) or for communities and posters to end up on fandom_wank for what would now be considered fairly vanilla opinions (liking Harry/Hermione; finding the Slytherins sympathetic, etc.)

(Anonymous) 2018-11-01 08:09 am (UTC)(link)As someone who shipped it back in the day and witnessed some of the wank first hand: Nope! Specific fans got on fandom wank for, among other things:
- Posting the entirety of HBP with only a few minor changes to make it more H/Hr-shippy.
- Saying they knew how slaves felt like after being called "delusional".
- Claiming buying the books led to forced abortions in China. Yes, really.
- Insisting that, when JKR didn't come to an event because of her husband's illness, it was a lie so she wouldn't have to face the H/Hr shippers.
And that's just from the top of my head.
