I love the Harry Potter books, and I still do. JK Rowling is sooo not perfect and I can't deny that some of the criticisms aimed at her don't have a basis in fact. BUT, I also feel like she's genuinely trying? Like, her books really don't have a lot of representation, and she tries to fix that, but she ends up putting her foot in her mouth or people blow up over it.

Example: "You can't say Dumbledore is gay! It wasn't shown in the books so it doesn't count." Yeah but the books are from a child's POV *and* when would that have come up in a discussion with Harry?

Example: "You can't say Dumbledore is gay! It wasn't shown in the books so it doesn't count." Yeah but the books are from a child's POV *and* when would that have come up in a discussion with Harry?

If you would really like to use this example, please explain to me how this applies to Half Blood Prince, where Harry is a 16 year old who has long conversations with Dumbledore that aren't about classes or school, or Deathly Hallows, where Harry is a 17 year old explicitly investigating Dumbledore's private life and relationship with Grindelwald.

I don't think that you can't say that Dumbledore is gay. Just, can we please take that for what it's worth - as something that she chose not to put in the books, and said afterwards? I appreciate that she's well-intentioned, and I don't think it's a huge deal, necessarily, but that's what it is.

Yes, when a student hits 16 it's always times for his head teacher/mentor to start telling him about his sex life.

Uuuh huuh.

I notice canon was able to go into other teachers love lives - we know Hagrid, Lupin, and Snape's sexualities. I wonder what the difference is...?

She wants brownie points for addendums dude. It’s not that complicated. Don’t claim diversity rep when you ain’t got shit to show for it. Like just say you didn’t think about it and move on. Not this WELL ACTUALLY THERE IS ONE JEWISH STUDENT AT HOGWARTS/I NEVER SAID HERMIONE *WASNT* BLACK/AH BUT YOU SEE YOU ARE THE HOMOPHOBE FOR NOT REALIZING GAY DUMBLEDORE shit she pulls.

Also the Nagini mess which is an extension of her racist hogwash against Eastern Asians in general (Cho Chang was a hot mess that never gets addressed enough)

Or maybe she just wrote it fairly organically using her own experiences and unconscious biases, but is a good enough person to accept criticism for those biases and try to make amends.

I'm not even a JK Rowling stan but jesus, people seem to just want to bend over backwards to demonise her.

lol, find me a link of her accepting criticism for anything, let alone making amends.

is a good enough person to accept criticism for those biases and try to make amends.

if that's what she's trying to do, she's really not doing a great job of it
