Warning for talk of masturbation and sexual assault:

https://variety.com/2018/tv/news/sarah-silverman-louis-ck-masturbated-1202988208/

I just think... yeah, she's within her rights to consent to that, but bringing it up considering his attempted comeback after he did this to other women without their consent feels like an apologist move no matter how you try to spin it.

Thanks for the link. If I'm reading correctly, she mentions multiple times that she's not making excuses for him, that she knows her experience with him was not comparable to those he victimized, that she doesn't think he should be openly embraced by the public again, and that she wishes she could promote her work without being asked about it. And she apologizes to a victim who took issue with her statements.

Soooo again, I can't stand Sarah Silverman, but I don't understand how she's handled this wrong.

/shrug I think saying repeatedly that you're not making excuses for someone buuuuuuuut isn't really the same thing as not making excuses for someone. The fact that she didn't manage to make this statement without throwing unintended shade at one of CK's victims about her professional equality was just... *criiiiiinge*

It's nice she apologized. There's just nothing about this whole thing that doesn't feel gross and weird.

Huh. This kind of mindset is really foreign and interesting to me. (Yours, not hers.)

(Anonymous) 2018-11-03 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
IDK. I guess to me it's too much like "No offense, but..."

"I'm not making excuses, but..."

I'd feel the same way if an actress from the Cosby Show stepped forward and said hey, this isn't excusing what Bill did to all those women and I don't think he should return to public and professional life, but sometimes I willingly took tranquilizers and let him have sex with my semi-conscious body and that was cool for me. I'd be like... you're mentioning this now? FFS, why??

Wow, that's an outrageous analogy, LOL!

Oh well, Silverman has spent her entire career being judgey, so I guess it's just karma for it to come back on her.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-03 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. Silverman's point in speaking out was to tell everyone that she'd had a similar experience as CK's victims, except that she consented. The Cosby example might shock you because his actions were far, far worse, but if a woman had stepped forward to say that she'd had similar experiences to Cosby's victims, only consensual, that'd cause quite a stir, too.
