How should I get more light in my room?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2018-11-04 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
So, as some people may know I moved recently. I moved from a bedroom that had 2 walls of windows, no trees, and direct sunlight for hours a day.

My new bedroom, while I love it only has 3 small windows, two huge trees in front, and virtually NO direct sunlight. Until I open my blinds, my room looks like night time. Also, because of the location of the heat vents, regardless of where I put my bed one will be covered.

This would be great in summer with the heat, but right now it makes my room constantly dark and freezing. Even when the rest of the house is warm, my room is cold.

This isn't really great for my depression. Not only do I have to deal with less sun because of winter, I also have to deal with the new room and no sun.

Anyone have any recommendations of what I can do?

I'll go ahead and make the obvious suggestion: SAD lamp.

How do I know what to look for? I googled it and there are tons of options. I also can't find any that would work on a timer so that I can have sun in the morning to wake up to.

DA

You could get an outlet timer. I have a couple similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Century-Plug-Mechanical-Timer-Grounded/dp/B00MVFF59S/ref=zg_bs_495340_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=S14APG0ERFFDEEQKR03Y

There are also alarm clocks that light up to simulate sunrise, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/AMIR-Simulation-Rechargeable-Multicolor-Dimmable/dp/B071JGYCST/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1541368942&sr=8-20&keywords=sun+alarm+clock+wake+up

Ooohh, an outlet timer made me remember that wifi outlets exists. I could get a lamp and program it to turn on with my tasker app!

Yeah, I go on an hour walk a day. But it is cold as hell.

I read somewhere that it's good to have three different sources of illumination in a room, whether it's a combination of windows, lamps, etc. Obviously in different places. Before investing in an expensive SAD lamp, definitely try a few options like:

* plastic window kit sheeting on the window to allow light in, but keep drafts out

* electric heater - I have a Vornado brand one that's very effective and fairly quiet. Also can double as a white noise machine if that helps.

* heavier blankets for the bed - maybe a down alternative duvet, flannel sheets, etc.

* Try one of those tall stand lamps with multiple bulbs that can point in different directions. If your room is small, you may only need one. They're great at casting indirect light upwards and reflecting it off of walls so it's illuminated without being glaring.

My room is fairly small. I might be able to get one those tall lamps and put full spectrum bulms in it. Then I can get a plant!

Fortunately, my windows don't have drafts. They are fairly new and double paned. So that is one bonus.

I should invest in a new duvet. Or maybe one of those warming blankets.

Plants definitely make a room more homey! I have similar issues when the days get shorter and colder. It helps a lot to make one's bedroom a cozy sanctuary. I'm not really much of a decorator, so it's a challenge.

Sherpa lined throws are awesome. Even piling on blankets and having multiple layers feels really good on cold nights, IMO - the weight is soothing as well as the warmth.

I am hoping to get some shelves made eventually. Right now, I am short on shelf space so a lot of my knick knacks are still boxed. :(

I thought about even getting a snuggy for when I am lounging around! I think they make like heavier ones.

We're the opposite. I like my room dark and cold.

Can you move rooms? Can you get the trees trimmed? Would you want to swap out the blinds for something that lets more light through or do you need the light blocked to sleep? If you have lighting, do you feel better with certain colour lights?

And a weird one: did you move away from your pet/s?
I thought my new place was freezing before I got my dog. Turns out I was just depressed and I had no one to talk to.

I can't move rooms sadly. The trees will be trimmed before winter but they are huge and directly above me so it won't do much for sun. I need the blinds to block out light during the night, also to keep creeper eyes out. My room faces the road. :(

I have an overhead light and desk lamp. One is always on because my room is so dim. Not really sure about different colored lights. I've never really experimented!

No, the cats came with me. Though, they have been jerks lately while adjusting to the move. :)

Ooh. Yeah I have a street facing window too. I have a plain white curtain from IKEA for the daytime. It's not blockout, but unless I have a lot of light on people can't see in. I have contact paper as cheap "frosting" for the bottom part of the window too. If I do need the curtains open to clean I don't want to make eye contact with strangers!

My room decor has helped me not feel like I live in an oven. I have soft fairy lights and a big print of a forest. You could try having more things that feel summery or warm and bright to you? I've seen people do fake windows and skylights for basements. Maybe you could check out the DIY subreddit?

I'm partial to having a heated throw to take the chill off my bed before I climb in, but maybe you'd prefer a heater with a fan if you prefer your room to feel dry? I'm not sure what your winters are like.

I'm glad you have your cats!

I think I might get a small electric heater for when it is really cold. Thinking of getting a wifi plugin so I can start it before I get home. :D

Re: heat vents - get one of these. Works a treat, and you won't be smothering your vent.

How far out can they extend the heat?

I dunno? However far it says at the link.

One of those full spectrum lights might help. When I get really cold I layer a fake fur blanket, then a feather comforter, and then a bedspread or quilt to trap the heat.

Maybe add some mirrors to let some of the light that does come in reflect around the room?

Not sure if I got any wall space for that. :( But I will see!

There are those little plastic(?) vent covers that redirect airflow to different parts of the room. Putting one on the vent under your bed should help at least a little... Honestly though, I'd invest in a space heater, they're probably the next best cost effective, while being the most versatile...

I'd say painting the room a brighter colour would help as well, but I'm not sure if it that's an option... Otherwise, light coloured paintings, and/or mirrors, maybe. I'll emphasize mirrors though, as they both reflect light, and enlarge the room. But if wallspace is limited, hanging them in corners, offsetting windows, would work well, if it's available.

Plants also bring life into a room. An indoor greenhouse, along with respective lighting, shouldn't take up much spare in and of itself. If not, then even your favourites of the fake variety might help.

And if all else fails, a nightlight. They're rather versatile, and come in pretty much every shape and size.

I just hope any of this helps;; You deserve a place that makes you happy!

Painting isn't an option right now, but in the future it will! I want to get some plants with a sun lamp. That will help both me AND the plants. THank you for your suggestions. I am buying a space heater this weekend for under my desk. :)
