Yeah, I never knew how to feel about that. Because one the one hand, Polgara's appreciation of physical labour contra using magic was always a point in her character that I liked.

On the other, there were the implications in how she became the no-nonsense matron of The Vale pretty much because she came to terms with the fact that she was A Woman (tm).

Life really is too short to watch movies you think you need to watch because they’re ‘classics’. The only one on your list worth watching is Cuckoo’s Nest, and even that can be a tough watch. Read a synopsis and move on with life.

So, like, there's clearly a class of stereotypes that are nominally positive, but that are still negative in effect.

Obvious examples include "black people have big dicks and are sexually potent" and "Jews are cheap". Even "Asians are smart". None of those things are intrinsically bad - in fact, all of them are good! Being careful with your money, or good at sex, or smart, are all positive traits (IMO). But all of them, when they're used as stereotypes, are used in ways that limit and objectify the person being stereotyped and to imply that those traits are actually negatives. Assuming that all Jewish people are cheap, and reducing them to their cheapness, and then turning it into a negative, and then using it to dehumanize them - that's how these things do work to entrench racism. And it's the same with the stereotype of the Asian convenience store owner.

And to be clear, I'm not saying that Apu goes that far at all. The problem comes from the cumulative effect of these stereotypes - from the broader pattern that they create. But the only way to alter that broad pattern of stereotypes and dehumanization is to push back on specific attitudes and examples, and that includes examples that aren't as glaring or aggressive.

Netflix has so many Adam Sandler movies and they do not understand that I will never want to watch a single fucking Adam Sandler movie in my life.

Other characters on the Simpsons have changed and evolved over 28 years.

Including Apu, who genuinely loves his job, has an extended family, is a lady's man, was reluctant for his cultural traditions on arranged marriage, genuinely loves his wife, had marital troubles, reconciled with his wife, became a father...

He's honestly one of the most well rounded characters in all of The Simpsons.

I find their Italian stereotypes much worse. Cookie Kwan is questionable too. She's Asian and she does real estate and she's savage about it. Is there anything more to her?

Other characters being racist is not a defense of Apu.

If you think that the specific character attributes of Apu raise him above the original racist aspects of his character, I think that's a reasonable opinion, even though I don't really agree.

It's fine to make fun of him

It's bad to make fun of him for being Indian, and it's especially bad to make fun of him on the basis of lazy American stereotypes about being Indian that aren't really grounded in experience or reality

I hate people who intellectually jerk off to this movie without reading the book. The movie omits the last chapter of the book and thus misses the whole point of the story. It’s a no wonder burgess started to hate the novel when people kept taking the movie at face value.
