At first I liked how Sabrina was bringing her socially-conscious viewpoints to the table, and trying to maximize her good. But then it just got ... really stupid because if you stop to think about the plot, none of it makes sense.

For example: does she know about what the coven does, or doesn't she? She clearly knew the weird sisters well enough to a) know their names and b) not be surprised by their racism/cursing bullshit. Her aunts regularly make references to cannibalism (in such a way that makes me doubt Sabrina has never eaten human flesh before, actually), Ambrose doesn't sugarcoat anything. Zelda is clearly fervent in her devotion to the coven, and is actually pretty open about the horrible stuff she's asked to do, but somehow it's a great shock to Sabrina that yes, she too is expected to sign her soul over to Satan who's going to ask her to do horrible stuff.

In the end, what was supposed to make Sabrina a modern, socially-conscious, fierce young woman, just makes her look super hypocritical self-centered because she only cares about things when they personally affect her (or, you know, she's so self-absorbed she literally doesn't notice anything going on around her unless it's explicitly pointed out, which isn't much more flattering).

Yes I had those thoughts too! It's like she just found out she was a witch, except she hasn't. She was raised by witches and she already has powers. I can't imagine that living with Hilda and Zelda wasn't like living with the Addams family, so why does she keep expecting everyone to be more human in their actions? I would have thought it would be the other way around. She might have some trouble adjusting to human school as a child and then teenager, because she was raised by witches?

I don't know. I feel like they just covered up the lack of thought that went into this by making her extra conflicted about the romance and devil bits like heeeeeeeey look she has thoughts and stuff!

Exactly! Like, she's advanced enough in her magic she can hold her own against witches who have been training since childhood, and she knows spells she can do at the drop of a hat. I totally buy she'd be shocked that Satan is more traditionally evil than her aunts likely suggested (tbh I think it would have been way more interesting for him actually to be the 'free will' adaptation than the traditional "grr I'm super mega evil". Also, how the hell are we supposed to like Hilda, Zelda, and Ambrose if they've been happily doing his bidding??), and I totally buy that she's surprised children died at the school. But never hearing about the Feasts of Feast? Shocked that the girls who put a blood curse on her would go too far when tormenting mortals they already treat like animals? Why is that suck a mystery?

I feel like the writing/story of the first episode was completely different from the rest of the episodes (and the last episode was a third completely different story).

This is all true. I still think the show is really fun.

I've heard some good things about this but as a fan of the TV show with Melissa Joan Hart I'm eyerolling this bullshit. Racism, cannibalism, satan?!
Reboots shouldn't toss source material under the bus to make shitter versions :/
