They probably would double down on the questionable stuff. And I'd probably still watch. Because dragons. I'm easy to please.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-19 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. McCaffrey had some old-school 1960s bodice-ripping romance stuff going on for a lot of her works. But... dragons.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-19 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded. That series has so many problems. SO many problems. But... dragons.

SO. MUCH. DUB-CON. But... dragons...

Yup. Dragons can make me tolerate a lot of bad stuff.

I'm sorry that audiences enjoy sex and violence, anon. I'm not sure how you or the majority of this comm managed to dodge that tendency of human nature, but good on you guys. Keep fighting the good fight.

I don't mind violence. And I like sex. I'd just appreciate more female-gaze sex or at least equal gaze sex. Everything is always so male-gaze as if women don't care about sex at all. Do these showrunners even know that women are watching their shows? Women like sex too.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's entirely possible to enjoy some level of sex and violence without wanting an adaptation to double down on it at the expense of the rest of the story. Your passive aggressive tone is a bit misplaced.

Not quite OP here because someone harvested my comment, but I’m fine with sex and don’t mind violence. But I could do without shows where sex and violence are used as a kind of plot wallpaper. Especially when they’re combined into rape scenes that are still presented as sexy.

One of the plot points of the Pern books is that riders are telepathically bonded to their dragons, so when dragons mate, not only do their riders, everyone in the vicinity comes (pun intended) along for the ride. And thanks to McCaffrey’s more or less bodice-riper sensibility, it’s presented as kind of a rapey and dangerous thing.

I would be fine with basically a raucous orgy where everyone’s clearly having a) an awesome time and b) all the sex. I would turn off the tv if it was presented as frightened people getting cornered and pawed at. I’m okay with someone getting punched or stabbed, but I’d be watching for dragons, not torture porn.

And you just *know*, any adaptation made would be most likely the later *and* would also do it's absolute and *utter* best to make 1 million percent sure that we knew that it was ONLY M/F SEX ONLY ONLY ONLY OMG NO HOMO.

I'm totally down for the wyer just all rolling around in a huge pit of furs, everybody touching and fucking and kissing and laughing and not caring what body is what, and afterward jumping into hot baths and eating and dozing and it all being a delightful sort of Sense8 orgy, like you said.

But not what Hollywood currently thinks of as 'sexy', and what they'd do with a Pern adaptation...I shudder to think.

>I'm totally down for the wyer just all rolling around in a huge pit of furs

Ditto! That's it then, we totally have to get the Sense8 producers to do the adaptation.

butthurt GoT fan, would you like some salve? :)

(Anonymous) 2018-11-19 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like you're probably right, OP. I'd still like to see the dragins, though. And canonically gay blue/green riders, lol

And you picked one of my favorite covers! I'm still sad that story was such a mess.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for making my comment into a secret, OP!

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm slightly worried that you think that sexism is the main appeal of GoT to its audience, anon.

Pern's shite though, so I'd not be upset if they never made a series of it, cool dragons or no.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
But OP never said it was the main appeal to GoT fans?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think even if they did double down on it, they would at least acknowledge the rape and violence inherent in the premise, which is more than the authors did.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oddly, I actually think they'd make a family-friendly version. Like, the mating flights were definitely a thing, but the rest of the books felt very teen. If they did the Harper Hall trilogy, that seems ripe for a YA type of movie. Jaxom's coming of age thing could easily strip out the dub-con with the peasant and be pretty sexless. Or the Dolphins of Pern was another coming of age story. Jaxom and Menolly would certainly be as likely to be protagonists as Lessa.

And I don't know that they would do a straight adaption. It would be so much easier to just do Benden during the 4th Pass with new characters. Now that Anne is gone, she won't micromanage (which I heard was an issue the last time this got close to movie/tv deal). They can have a setup for a TV show that allowed for new adventures without the dub-con/non-con from Anne's books. I don't know, a GOT style Pern just doesn't compute for me as a likely route to take for these books.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'd give a hard pass on Jaxom but I would LOVE a Menolly series. I know Lessa's the top bet, just plot-wise, but I loved Menolly's books so much.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Jaxom in the books is very bland but I think a charismatic actor with some tweaking of details (like the peasant girl subplot) would make for an interesting story, and might even convert some Jaxom-haters.

But I do feel it would be a shame if they didn't have a female protagonist when there's Lessa, Menolly, Moreta, Sallah, etc. as choices. I liked Menolly in the Harper Hall trilogy but not as much outside that. I know it's almost completely unlikely, but my dream would be for them to do Moreta. I loved that book, and an older woman being the protagonist would be lovely for a fantasy/sci-fi show/movie.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Hell yeah, that would be great.

My problem is actually less with Jaxom himself and more that Ruth, for such a unique dragon, was obnoxious. I remember reading it like "okay I get it, he's SUPER smart, but he doesn't have to be such an ass about it"

That and as a kid I didn't like the entire rediscover-the-supercomputer-and-destroy-the-red-star plot, which Ruth (and Jaxom) played a huge role in.

You might be misremembering, because F'lar raping Lessa outside of mating flights definitely didn't feel very teen to me...

Like I started reading Dragonflight after coming from Harper Hall and I was not prepared for how disgusting the books treated Lessa (not that Lessa was a particularly sympathetic character, god everyone is awful).

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I'm not misremembering. That kind of thing isn't pervasive in the books the way it is in GOT. The rest of the books are definitely more teen, especially once you get out of Dragonflight and Dragonquest. There isn't a lot of sex, and unless it's a mating flight, the sex isn't necessary for the plot. It's easy enough to strip it out and have a family-friendly movie.

Okay, it has clearly been a while since I read this, because I don't remember that. I only remember the rape during the mating flight. Which, ugh. Like, stupid writing choice, and also F'lar could have warned Lessa. There was no reason not to tell her. Terrible scene. But I don't remember any rape outside of the mating flights.
