Inspired by #1- what genre will get you every time

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-11-19 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What is that genre you will watch or read every time, no matter how bad the movie/tv show/book. What is your fantasy genre that just hits all your button.

I'm all about the dragons. If something has dragons, I will probably watch it, no matter how bad it is.
Also fantasy involving warrior women or women wizards.

There's so much stuff out there that I can afford to be picky, but: weird west and jazz age stories.

What is Weird West?

Western mashed up with fantasy, horror, and/or science fiction.

Have you watched Cowboy Bebop? Best western scifi there is.

Re: Inspired by #1- what genre will get you every time

No, I think Cowboy Bebop and Firefly are more western-influenced scifi rather than weird west. To hit the itch it needs to be plausibly western in settings and not just western themes exported into scifi (or scifi guys in Western cosplay, Blizzard). Similarly, I'd put Yojimbo just outside of the boundary.

Texarcana, The Gunslinger (at least the first novel), and Jonah Hex are the core reference works for weird west in print. Cowboys and Aliens, Wild Wild West, and The Warror's Way are good cinema touchpoints. I'm a fan of Belcher's Golgotha for more recent fiction, and Serialbox's Bullet Catchers is really, really good and really, really weird.

Dragons are cool, aren't they?

Yes. Yes they are. Dragons are always awesome.

Talking animals.

But it can't be the same species doing all the talking, the exception being Geronimo Stilton. Hence, I never got with Warriors or Watership Down, but Redwall, Mistmantle, and Hermux Tantamoq.

Watership down has talking birds, mice, and at least one instance of a cat, though

Oh, didn't know that.

DA- It’s still mostly rabbits talking because it’s from their POV and they keep to themselves. But in several notable occasions they talk to other species.

The Animals Of Farthing Wood is awesome for this.

I wouldn't say I'd watch all the way through, but I will try anything with witches or any stories where people have an animal familiar of some kind.

I love seeing all the different fictional tastes on magic. Different witches and other types of magic users fascinate me. I love magic in stories, although I wouldn't see I will always watch it, it definitely adds interest for me.

And familiars are great. For me, having a character who has a close bond with an animal, a bond that may be beyond the ordinary, will absolutely make me interested.

Just Googled isolated horror and came up with Exam, Devil, and Cube. Liked those three films so isolated horror seems like a good genre to seek films from!

Some good ones (some you have probably seen) Alien, The Thing, Hush, Buried, The Descent, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and Them (Ils).

Knights. Princesses/Princes. Bad-ass princesses are great, but ngl I have a terrible fondness for the damsel-in-distress trope too and will eat that up with a spoon.

I'm a sucker for spies and/or court intrigue in fantasy. Shady dealings are my jam. Also, more a character than a genre, but I love the whole 'noble fugitive from a corrupt regime' thing.

Also, anything involving fairies. Well. Fae/elves, not so much the palm-sized pixie type fairies. Though those too, in worlds with the others as well. Pooka/nucklavee/selkies/swan-maids/boogeymen/hobgoblins, all of those. I grew up on portal fantasies into the world of the fairies and/or old gods, so it left a mark.

Beauty and the Beast stories, though I do have limits—namely, that the Beast can’t be a hot dude with one or two cosmetic scars and maybe a couple tattoos or piercings. The Beast (or the Phantom of the Opera or the wicked sorcerer or whoever’s filling those trope shoes has to have something going on where the average reaction to seeing them ranges from “holy shit” to “oh god it’s gonna kill me.” Also just being a hot jerk who gets called beastly for being a massive asshole is right out.

I'll watch almost anything that's spooky in a gothic setting with a beautiful house in it. Not slasher or anything gory, though.

Romantic comedies.

Even the worst ones are fun to watch, if only to think up ways to improve them as fanfic AUs for my OTPs.

I'll watch any adaptation of Sherlock Holmes.
