You shouldn't be cruel or contrarian for the sake of contrarianism when it comes to people who've recently died, and you should try to have a general sense of proportion and not focus solely on their dementia-prone last days, or whatever.

But I don't think you have an obligation to be nice, either. And there's always a lot of utter crap that people say after a celebrity dies. And I don't think that we have an obligation to respect people who are using his death for blatant attention-grabbing, or spreading narratives that are less than entirely accurate.

Anyway it's the Internet so everything sucks regardless.

He was 90-fucking-5, had lost his wife of almost 70 years a year before, and had little to no power to make or break careers.

Whether be got grabby or not, it's ridiculous to lump him in with a stain like Weinstein.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-21 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
That's part of what makes at least one of the accounts seem iffy to me. He's 95, how the hell can he masturbate in front of someone?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-21 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Because not all men that age are impotent. Simple.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-21 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Adding to that, inappropriate sexual behavior's a symptom of dementia, and wasn't the only symptom he was showing at that point. It happens to men and women, nursing home staff are aware of it and trained to handle it, and it's not really fair to shit on someone for what they do when their mind's shorting out.

I'm glad you brought this up. I, thankfully, haven't seen any of the hate on my feeds, but since I lost my dad after a long fight with Alzheimer's this year, I would have gone nuclear on anyone who said the kinds of things the OP talks about seeing.

I have a policy to always believe the victims, all the way until something comes up that proves them liars. Still, with those rumors, I always found it weird that none of the actual nurses came to speak about it, only their male boss, and just as a horrible fight between Lee's handlers and his daughter began, shortly after Jean's death. That alone made it all very fishy.

Also, as you say anon, he was 95, almost deaf and legally blind. I'd be willing to bet that if he got grabby, it definitely wasn't out of predatory actions.

(Plus, the comic industry is VERY small. Even without public accusations, word goes out if someone is a stain like Weinstein, and they become open secrets. There were a LOT of stories about Silver age editors... but not about Lee. Which also says a lot)

AND fuck, he had just died. So no, not the time to go all attention grabbing and trying to smear his memory. Wait at least a week, or go with the normal smear narrative about how he swindled Jack Kirby.

innocent until proven guilty is officially fucked, huh

Probably because aged care staff are completely used to this kind of behavior (it's almost never abusive, just plain old dementia, and old women do it too). Frankly I think their male boss shouldn't have said anything about it either, because it's violating medical privacy. The issue here is staff safety, nothing an old man with dementia did or didn't do.

What does his wife's death have to do with it

(Anonymous) 2018-11-21 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
A major disruption in routine, such as the death of a spouse, can contribute to dementia symptoms. Primarily because it reveals symptoms that came on slowly and were mitigated by routines.

Because some people are just assholes who enjoy shitting on everything.

(Not a fan of this guy myself, don't know much about him besides he was Stan Lee, comic book creator, but if he was groping people in nursing homes [and hadn't done things like that before he was confined to nursing homes], he may have been suffering from dementia. Of course that's no excuse but it is a possible explanation of that behavior.)

(Anonymous) 2018-11-21 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
He did have dementia.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-21 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Um, dementia is a pretty good excuse. You've never interacted with someone who had dementia? It's absolutely horrifying how much it destroys a person's cognitive functions.

Of course it's an excuse. People who start behaving sexually inappropriately because of dementia can't be held morally responsible for it - their brain is destroying itself and the behaviour comes from that (and dementia can produce radical personality changes, so it's not necessarily even a matter of patients doing things they'd always wanted to but were inhibited from doing by fear or moral principles).

Now, obviously that doesn't mean you have a responsibility as the manger of a care home to safeguard your staff and other residents from being affected by it (as far as you can) - but it's completely inappropriate to hold the dementia patient culpable for it.

I still can't get over Bill fucking Maher's commentary on comic fans not being adults and how many people agreed with him (at least in the comments on the EW article).

Like, even if Maher was right, which he wasn't, making a statement about it while people are mourning the death someone who did mean something to them is a really shitty thing to do. Not entirely surprising of Maher, but still shitty. And people agreeing with him just boggled my mind.

I was completely disappointed when he said that. I don't know why he suggested people who might enjoy "kid" stuff aren't adults (as if being into superhero movies or video games has ever kept me from holding down a job or doing my taxes), or even implied this is somehow the cause of the Trump presidency. I mean, for someone who complains how Trump shoots his mouth off about topics he's completely ignorant about, he sure had no problem basically doing the same.

A lot of folks gave him a well-deserved beatdown on his blog, though (unfortunately, as you say, he had a handful of supporters). I don't care if he was serious or joking. It was such a goddamn stupid thing to say.

Ugh, he is such an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-21 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I ignore everything Bill Maher says. He's a professional asshole. Even when our opinions align, he's a gigantic dick because that's his schtick. I figured he was just trying to start shit and Stan Lee's death was a convenient excuse.

I agree. He's horrible. Even when I agree with him, he's said it in such a horrible way as to make what he's said meaningless.

To be fair, those rumors were circling after his wife died too. Last I heard, the evidence was pretty flimsy but you never know, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-21 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
honestly. You don’t need to make up stories about him being a sexual harasser. Stan Lee is a POS for plenty of other reasons. His treatment of Jack Kirby is just the tip of the iceberg. Great creator, not the best person in the world.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-21 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who works in hospital and is always around elderly dementia patients, I can attest that sexual harassment is common (really, you can't truly comprehend how horrid dementia is, how much it fundamentally destroys a human brain, until you've seen it in action) and any nurse worth their salt should know how to handle it. Most of the ones I work with don't even flinch if they see a confused elderly patient walking around buck naked. If they blabbed about that then that's incredibly unprofessional on their part and, wew, that level of confidentiality breech is yikes.
