I think "main" is a little strong. I think that assigns it too much influence. But I think there's a lot of truth to what you're saying otherwise, in terms of how the logic of the show works, and the kinds of positions it takes.

What? I mean, what? It's been a while since I watched any episodes, but if this show is your idea of conservative values, I think you've been watching it wrong.

Re: ????

It's certainly not an ideologically conservative show, or doctrinaire.

At the same time, I think... I mean, the whole point of the show is making fun of people who care about things, especially "liberal scolds". And you don't have to go to a ton of effort to draw a link between that impulse, and the desire to do things just to "own the libs". That South Park ethos is very big and relevant, even if the actual policy positions that conservatives endorse are not.

Re: ????

(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Have you not watched the show in a while? The show is conservative view points wrapped in liberal clothing. Well, more a libertarian in liberal's clothing. South Park has denied global warming, uses slurs as humor, compared being transgender to wanting to be a dolphin, etc.

South Park has tricked liberals into thinking the show is liberal because they say shit and fuck.

From my POV, the damage is more people realizing that South Park "both sides" a lot and it bred a lot of "I'm smarter and more enlightened because I don't pick a side!" attitudes.

Is...is South Park's main audience considered liberal-minded?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
What blowback?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
They made a sequel to their Al Gore climate change episode, which made everyone remember that they did an episode about how climate change wasn't real in the first place and how that was kind of fucked up.

You're giving them way, way too much credit. I also highly doubt a lot of Trump voters watch and/or like the show.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Trump and South Park are both extremely popular in the same areas.

A lot of Trump voters care mostly about upsetting Liberals and people who have Liberal opinions. In that I think South Park pleases a lot of Trump voters.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
They did an entire season about how Trump was going to be an awful president. Wtf are you smoking?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Sure. But he also makes liberals mad, which is the actual deepest, most central value and purpose of the show.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
No, they did an entire season full of false equivalencies about how both sides are the same.

Besides obvious troll.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
All these South Park secrets come across as written by someone very young without much context about the history or purpose of the show. It's a little cringey tbh.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Nah.

I mean, I know what you mean, the actual way the secrets are written is not perfect, but the point that they're making is justified, and I don't think "the context about the history or purpose of the show" actually changes that.

"Having concerns and trying to better the world is being just as bad as the people who ruin the world! Also laughing at Jewish people is acceptable because it's only ironic antisemitism! Stop being so sensitive!"

Fuck South Park.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
conservatives and the GOP are to blame for trump. I hate the “CRY MOAR BOTH SIDES BAD” party as much as the next person but let’s not kid ourselves and think they weren’t going to vote for trump or whoever the fuck was on the Red ballot to begin with. Republicans ALWAYS without fail fall in line. The people who spout “cry more liberals” were always right leaning to begin with.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-22 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
They're not liberal or conservative, they're libertarian. Some libertarian values track with liberal values, some with conservative values.

That was the only thing that really bothered me: the giant douche vs. turd sandwich episode. OBVIOUSLY there is a lesser of two evils when it comes to politics, guys.

The issue is really that Matt and Trey are rich white guys, so nothing does really matter that much to them, and there's no zero sum element to election results.

I do and will always love Butters, though.

And I also would stop short at blaming a cartoon for the results of an election.
