117 Poor Orson, he peaked too early. If you can, look for "F is for Fake" because it's fantastic.

126 It's actually about the dying American West and how socioeconomics and changing times have trapped these characters, and their sexual relationship furthers how trapped they feel. I'm sorry, though, both that "gay cowboys" led you to a period place (there are still cowboys) and that the fandom conception of the film is all about wondering why they didn't just move to San Francisco, when the entire point is that they never could have.

142 That was my FAVORITE "stories about China" story during the Olympics, seriously.

148 Me too. To me they're second only to Laura and Remington in the pantheon of mystery-solving TV couples. (I bet that's Max standing behind them, too.)

152 ♥

160 I love that we fangirls are all like, "GRANT!" and no one really is all over Tori. But then, Tori didn't win Battlebots, and Grant did.

163 Okay, I'm not in fandom but I watched season 2 and dude. Maya is just really annoying and pointless as was her brother. Claire, Elle and Monica are made of awesome. By the way, I ship Matt/Mohinder and I could give a shit about Sylar.

185 Oh TRAVIS. How I love SYTYCD season 2. *sigh*

187 I've loved the Aristocats since I was a tiny tiny thing.

160. I'd be all over Tori... if he didn't have to compare to Grant. :P

I really like Tori. I definitely wouldn't kick him out of my bed for eating crackers. But if I had the two of them right in front of me to choose from? I'd pick Grant.

I like how defensive people are getting about this. Apparently the combination of "you don't like Maya" and the picture is making people read an entirely different secret than the one I wrote.

Re: 163

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, then what did you write? As far as I can tell, you say "I get that not liking Maya means you aren't sexist, but I don't actually believe people who say that because they go on to bash other female characters. Oh and also Mylar people are the crazy."

So I said, hmm, I saw reasons not to like her, based on having only seen season 2 (and not season 1) at the behest of some pals. And also, I think that Matt and Mohinder make an adorable fake family, and I don't understand Mylar. I didn't actually feel defensive about it until you replied to me in the manner you did, as I'm not in your fandom.

I'm sorry I wandered into your fandom drama unknowingly, but I don't see any reason to be snide to me and half the other people who replied.

Re: 163

(Anonymous) 2008-08-25 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Do you bash the other women? Because if not you're getting overly defensive for pretty much no reason. And if yes, then all your excuses are just that.

I'm just being amused by all the people spazzing about "we just don't like Maya, there's nothing wrong with that", when the secret was about two behaviors in conjunction with one another-- that, granted, occur regularly in the fandom-- not just the one behavior by itself. It makes me think that all the people freaking out really do make snide comments about the other women and are trying to rationalize it to themselves. Also, if you think I'm being mean, you haven't been on this community long enough.

Re: 163

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say you were being mean; I said you were being snide. I also think you're being condescending, by implying that all these people that "misread" your secret are doing so for reasons other than that your secret wasn't clear. Only if one was in Heroes fandom (which 80% of the people reading your secret aren't) might one know that the "snide" comments of which you speak are about sexuality, rather than the way you put it, which is that people making snide comments of any nature have a "problem with female sexuality."

I wasn't being defensive, since not only do I not bash the other women, but I don't think I've ever written anything about Heroes. I was merely pointing out that there were reasons to dislike Maya. If you think making a comment was being defensive, then you know, rock on with that. I didn't feel defensive until you replied to me and called me defensive and said I misread your secret. Now, I'm just irritated with you for your un-earned tone of superiority.

Elsewhere you said that everyone who had a problem with your secret was a Mylar shipper, when I explicitly said that I'm not—to the extent that I am a shipper in a show I don't like much. I could give a shit that Maya fucked Sylar, because I could give a shit about Sylar.

Elsewhere you also said that no one who has a problem with Maya has a problem with the male characters, when I explicitly said in my reply that I had no time for Maya's brother. So please stop putting me in whatever bucket you've got going here.

Again, not in your fandom.

Re: 163

(Anonymous) 2008-08-25 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
If you're not in the fandom, why are you even responding to the secret?

The secret says "People who bash Maya + people who bash other women = sexist". I'm condescending because a bunch of people did get the point of the secret, and almost everyone else who's responded is so over the top defensive it's hilarious.

Re: 163

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's YOU that hasn't been on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets very long. Why post a secret on a multi-fandom board if you only want people who are in the fandom to respond to the secret? That seems to me the entire point of this community. If you don't want non fandomers to reply, why not find/start some Heroes secret community?

I'm still not seeing why you should be condescending to me. I don't think my original statement was defensive; I was just saying that I didn't like Maya much and I wasn't sure what it had to do with Mylar, since I'm not a Mylar shipper. What you might have said was, "I can see you're not in fandom. A lot of the Maya-haters are Mylar shippers and think she'll get in the way of their ship." Until I saw your picture (which I assume is a still from next season?) I didn't know anything about Maya snogging Mohinder. Now, if the entire Mylar thing was a red herring to be obnoxious, then so sorry that I didn't realize it was a joke.

I don't care about Heroes, or Maya, or Mohinder, or Sylar. But I won't be condescended to because I lacked knowledge not in evidence.

Re: 163

[identity profile] slytherincesss.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
As well, one does not have to "be in fandom" proper for something to be educated or well-versed about it. I mean, my fandom is Harry Potter. but I watch a ton of TV and I read a lot. I watch Heroes and have seen every episode, probably twice actually, and while I'm not in Heroes fandom, I can really get behind your thoughts on Maya. She is not a compelling character; nor is Sylar. I don't think I have to be in the Heroes fandom to qualify that opinion as informed or valid.

Icon for the anonymouse.

I know, Anon, this isn't even our Special Thread of Lurve, but I couldn't not comment on this.

Do you bash the other women? Because if not you're getting overly defensive for pretty much no reason.

Talk about batshit fans. This is the second time I've seen you pull this - commenting on someone's calm and reasonable post, trying to get a rise out of them, and then claiming that their defensiveness simply must be due to their deep dark secret sexist tendencies. People are defensive because they know you're trying to unearth something that isn't there.

As I said back in our thread, your need to appear on The Moral High Ground with this sexism thing is extremely ridiculous when one considers what a pretentious bitch you're being to the people who actually exist.

Re: 163

(Anonymous) 2008-08-26 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL late, but jesus. The secret was pretty clear.

The fact that people kept going "Well, I like OTHER WOMEN, therefore I'm not sexist about Maya" made me roll my eyes. Because the secret makes it very clear that in that case I'm not talking about you. I'm accusing you and her of being overly defensive, because either you wanted to read something into the secret that wasn't there or... something. I'm not sure why, if someone doesn't make snide remarks about the other female characters, they would get annoyed at me pointing out that making snide remarks about other female characters in a post about hating Maya makes you not look particularly female-friendly.

It's not about the moral high ground. It's about a secret that was pretty simple, the point of which three or four people consistently missed.

Tori also has that nearly-40-and-still-wrecks-his-bike-in-front-of-girls-he's-trying-to-impress thing handicapping him. Grant is just an adorable genius.

Re: 117 OP

Poor Orson, he got himself stuck in an adult world too and he let it use him up. I don't think he ever stopped being awesome, but he kind of lived his life in reverse.

I've been meaning to see it, he looks so iconic in the photos!

Re: 163

(Anonymous) 2008-08-25 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
What I want to know is, if you only watched season two, how can you possibly hate Maya for being "annoying and pointless" and yet still like Claire? Not that Maya's storyline was perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but Claire's endlessly whiny emo high school boyfriend drama made me want to claw my eyeballs out way more than Maya ever did.

Re: 163

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Claire's endlessly whiny emo high school boyfriend drama was really irritating, but the difference for me was that Claire was much less passive. She has powers, she used them; she got angry at her father; she was willing to fight. Maya would do shit (granted, not of her own volition) and then wibble about it until her brother made it all okay; she had no agency. And really, none of this is Maya's fault—she might have been an interesting character, but the storyline wasn't integrated into the rest of the show at all, so the show didn't make you care about her. Every time she was on the screen I was like, "can we go back to Hiro? or Claire? or Monica? or DL?" And Sylar showing up part way through Maya's story made me care even less; there are no words for how much I completely cannot stand Sylar.

To be honest, I watched Heroes because some friends of mine were watching it and a lot of racial issues with it came up on [livejournal.com profile] deadbrowalking and I wanted to see for myself. But I don't actually like good v evil, and while I understand from the fans that season 2 wasn't very good, watching the race weirdness for myself wasn't enough reason to sit through a lot of other things I didn't care about. So I'm probably really unfair in how I dislike this show.

[identity profile] mob-boss-tess.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
exactly. Those were exactly my thoughts. The point wasn't really "We're here, we're queer" it was a love story was was shackled with doubt. I agree with you that the point of the story wasn't that they SHOULD move away and live together, it was that they never could. It wasn't feasible, ever. And I found that was the heartbreak of it.
