You can't say this in Barbie collector circles. Because Reasons! *Le Gasp* But I just have to say this somewhere. I hate hate hate this sculpt. The SuperStar. The one from 1976 with upturned nose and most often eyes with blue everything. The one just about every caucasian doll from 1976 to 1998 had. (Doll on the right is from 2015 though. It's a Moschino Barbie, in case you were wondering. Because Moschino is _so_ ironic. *Eyeroll*)

The Barbie collector fandom seems to be so dominated by Baby Boomers that it's so rare to see someone admit those earlier dolls weren't that great. They were cutting edge for their time (in theme and execution), but they're just, objectively, not as good on a technical level as modern dolls. Modern Barbie doesn't glare at you or flash you a creepy airhead smile from an overly made up face. And you can put her legs in hot water and the vinyl doesn't burst open exposing metal wiring. And she comes in a wider variety of skincolors and body types. But old people don't want those unless they're a special collector's edition on a theme old people like.

That's what I've assumed was a big reason for the love of the sculpt. I'm gen X and also only started collecting barbies in my forties.

See, this is what really boggles the mind about most of the SuperStar Barbies. Why do they all look like that? Why every part of their eyes are blue? People have been making miniature human figures that are actually beautiful and not creepy for literally thousands of years, how did Mattel manage not to find a single talented individual to design those dolls?

Now I really want to eavesdrop on Barbie collectors having it out over the various fandom complaints, I know fuck all about Barbies and it seems amazing.

Doll fandom is a disaster.

The doll fandom is a dumpster fire.

I don't collect Barbies, but I do collect American Girl dolls and the drama is definitely popcorn-worthy.

I hate it too, OP! It's creepy.

Puh-reach, OP. The overabundance of this sculpt throughout my childhood has led me to feel like any Barbie who shows her teeth is cheap and trashy. I've started making exceptions for different sculpts (I mean the Mackie sculpt isn't the end-all be-all), but the superstar sculpt on a collectible doll will make me nope right out of buying upon sight.

I think the childhood nostalgia is one of the biggest reasons why so many collectors love this sculpt. I still have my childhood barbies left (and in pretty decent condition even, because I was very strange child), so I don't feel the need to 're-collect' them.

On the subject of collectible Barbies, and what will make me nope right out on sight? The lack of articulation. Like the new YSL dolls. 150 dollars and they coudn't even throw in articulation? Yeah, no. I bought a factory head from ebay, made a wig for it and gave it an articulated fashionistas body with a matching skintone. Same with the Frida Kahlo. She sat on a wheel chair FFS, and the doll doesn't have bendable knees? Off to the ebay XD

I agree but I also like Peaches and Cream a lot and this round faced sculpt fits the soft look really well.
