Fantastic Beasts Discussion

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to discuss it, and I can't find any discussion anywhere. I want actual discussion about having seen it, not about how you don't plan on seeing it or haven't seen it yet. What did everyone think? Love it, hate it...?

Spoilers, obviously.

Placeholder so it collapses (once there are more comments, anyway.)

Re: Fantastic Beasts Discussion

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It was so stupid. Just...convoluted to the max. Apparently, like Star Wars, everyone in the HP universe is related to every one else.

What's funny is that this isn't even true in Star Wars anymore. HP and Star Wars have done a reverse. They flip-flopped around.

I'm gonna vague this up because I'm not sure when the comments collapse, but the final twist about a Certain Someone being a Long Lost Brother of a Certain Someone was so fucking stupid.
This, Cursed Child, the epilogue - I really am increasingly convinced that JK is trawling FF.net for story ideas.

I have to think the ideas would be better if she was doing that

Yeah, I really hope it's a big lie from the big bad being a manipulative bastard. Seriously, fuck that stupid "twist".

Re: Fantastic Beasts Discussion

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
That was literally the moment the movie went from 'that was okay' to 'JK Rowling needs to stop now.' The movie before was rough and too convoluted but at least somewhat enjoyable to watch, but that twist is the stupidest fucking thing. I think having read The Cursed Child makes it even worse because she's basically using the same tired trope twice now as a 'big twist,' having a new character be mysteriously related to an old one. I feel like Rowling has officially reached George Lucas levels of really needing someone to say no to her stupid ideas.

The whole subplot with Queenie was really stupid, on every possible level. Her actions make no sense from a Doylist or Watsonian perspective.
Also the HP!verse really needs to make up its mind about whether mind-controlling people into loving you is fucked up or nah [spoiler alert: yes it fucking is].

I've seen detailed explanations about how she was desperate, made vulnerable, and fell prey to manipulations, and some were lamost convincing, but I'm still mad as hell they went this way--whether it makes sense or not I wish it hadn't happened at all!

Re: Fantastic Beasts Discussion

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll defend the movie just a bit by pointing out that Jacob always loved Queenie, it was the engaged part that was an enchantment. Still sketchy, though, especially with the emphasis on Leta being the product of rape.

I think I would have bought the Queenie subplot with more time. If Grindlewald had helped Jacob in some way, for instance. Because unfortunately certain political events have taught me that good people CAN be swayed towards horrible ideas without even realizing what's happened. However, it takes more than just one conversation.

I liked it but there are a lot of questions for me. Many many timelines just don't add up. Dumbledore family included. Either she is changing past canon or can't count or it is not true. All of which are possible but JK just seems to come out with random shit these days.

I thought the circus and Nagini would play a bigger part.

Jude was amazing and so was Eddie. I loved all the creatures so that means they are doing the base things right.

I think this film suffered from trying to tell too many stories and set up too many things for the last three films and did not pull it off as well as it could have but it is still a good film. I think kids will adore it.

I didn't hate it but I couldn't love it entirely either. I felt they... just tried to hard to up everything.

I am mad as hell about what they did with Queenie, what they did to Leta, and how they pulled out that Aurelius crap. Disappointed on Nagini.
I'm relieved that Tina was treated fairly well.
And I'm in absolute love with both Scamander brothers and their relationship, it's exactly what I need in my fandoms at the moment.
Disappointed of course in the cowardly way they hid Dumbledore's love for Grindelwald.
And of course the visuals were awesome, but that doesn't make up for the plot.

I really hope FB3 fixes what is still salvageable but I won't hold much hope.

I say this as someone who's been an actual fan of JKR for many years and loved the first film: It was a hot mess. I saw it in theatres and read the screenplay, and I still don't understand half of what was going on.

There were way too many subplots. Leta's story was interesting but unnecessary except as an oh-so-clever red herring just so we could have the BIG REVEAL at the end. Which is a dubious reveal.

My biggest complaint is that I thought we were finally, finally going to get some moral ambiguity, but no, it was the same old good versus evil bullshit with a half-assed (and failed) attempt to make the evil look slicker.

I did enjoy Jude Law's Dumbledore very much, and the mirror scene was beautiful and heartbreaking (and unmistakably gay IMO).

But for the first time in my HP fan life, I have zero interest in the next installment and doubt I'll even buy this one on DVD.

And it never collapsed because it was the first comment and you are officially the biggest dick here. So thanks? Glad you got your actual discussion and those of us who don't have a spare £15 until next month don't need to bother now.

Re: Fantastic Beasts Discussion

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Literally nothing above are specific spoilers. Honestly, I could give MORE specific spoilers and you'd not believe me because it is so fucking stupid.

Also, you are welcome. You can save that $15 for something good.

NAYRT, but seriously? You couldn't just quickly scroll past? Also, most people have been coy in their comments.

I'm sorry you're strapped for cash, though.

You saw the words "final twist", kept reading and still blame ayrt for spoilers? Haha, okay

Isn't there a link under every thread going "hide x comments" you can click to collapse it? I have one on my screen, use it for everything I don't want to see.

AYRT: I know. I actually felt really bad about it. Until this comment.

It wasn't my fault that it didn't collapse properly. I actually DID write another comment for people to comment under, but no one did that either. Not that I blame them. It happens. And as another comment said, you could have scrolled.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I know this is not the intent of the thread but can someone spoil everything for me?
I can't sit upright for long enough to see it in the cinema so I won't see it until it's streaming and I want to know now.

Really trying to get the comments to collapse. Not that just one will do it, but it might speed the process along.

It would take way more comments than we get these days, unfortunately.
