Tumblr: the strikethrough

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Where's everyone going to? I've seen mastodon, pillowfort, and twitter.

Re: Tumblr: the strikethrough

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? What did tumblr do?

Re: Tumblr: the strikethrough

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Apple removed Tumblr's app because of child porn. In the rush to delete anything even possibly connected to it, they've deleted blogs that did not have cp (presumably ones that have been reported by antis), and have cleared out entire tags.

Also: it seems to me like safesearch is on by default and can't be turned off?

No where. I am glad Tumblr is getting rid of child porn. It sucks it happened at the same time there was a bug deleting blogs. Just contact them if that happened to you and get your blog back.

I have no problem with them deleting child porn but is that *actually* all they're doing?

Me and a number of people I know have been deleted despite never posting child porn, and contacting Tumblr has done nothing. We are still waiting for responses, and some people have had their blogs banned permanently. I'm glad Tumblr is getting rid of images of child abuse as well, but the way they are doing it is one that targets innocent people and doesn't even get a lot of the porn bots etc since there are so many still on that site.

Is pillowfort even a thing? I googled it and it just gives me 'bad gateway'.

if Pillowfort and Mastodon were capable of being actually successful, they'd have done it already imo

I wish people would just come back to DW. Meh.

I don't think DW was ever a big thing, though. By the time fandom really left LJ, Tumblr was already the next thing.

Dreamwidth is so 1990s when it comes to formatting and media. Yes, I know you can upload images to DW, it's still a pain to use.

My tumblr seems to be working fine even though it has adult content. And I've gotten likes/reblogs, so seems my followers are doing fine. So not planning on leaving.

I don't know. I wonder where the kids have gone. Tumblr's been on a downslide for a few years now. It's still active, but it seems notes get fewer and fewer. If history is any indication, this whole mess could be the death knell.

After stepping back from one of my fandoms (that went through mailing lists and geocities/angelfire webrings to dedicated forums and lj to tumblr) I peeked back in and it seems a lot of activity is on discord servers and instagram.

I had no plans to leave tumblr but a lot of people on my dashboard are predicting its imminent demise so I'm not sure how much choice I'm going to have. I did post my twitter account there so people could theoretically keep in touch with me that way. I never tweet but if I'm not wasting as much time on tumblr I might find time for it. Twitter doesn't seem to be great for fandom stuff though. I'm supposed to get a Pillowfort account but I was supposed to get the code Friday and I didn't.

Re: Tumblr: the strikethrough

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Good riddance tbh. Tumblr was always a shit platform for anything other than just posting and reblogging art; I will never for the life of me understand why fandom decided to migrate there instead of places that are actually formatted for discussion and communities.

Re: Tumblr: the strikethrough

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda agree but mainly out of spite. Tumblr was home to photographers and graphic artists who didn't want to deal with the wank on dA and we all got pushed off starting with the first dash redesign and creation of text posts.

I guess I should check on my account, I don’t want to lose it. I haven’t been on in months because I wanted to avoid talking to someone on there and then the anxiety kept compiling... but I miss my friends on there, I hope I haven’t lost my only way to contact with any of them.

I think we're seeing the final days of tumblr, but I also think it'll take a few years for anything else to really emerge as the next bastion of fandom. pillowfort seems to be the most "popular" choice in that it ticks all the boxes, but it's still in closed beta.

It's just like the original strikethrough on LJ. It didn't happen overnight. It'll take a while for people to get fed up, and most people will wait to move until there's a viable alternative for them to jump to.

I mostly use reddit for fandom right now. I've also gone back to some of the 4chan boards.

According to what I'm reading from the tagged stuff, people are moving to twitter. At least you can lock up your twitter for more privacy so that's a plus over tumblr.
