I feel you, but... yeah, a lot of fanfic writers just don't like to do research. Not even a little bit. Especially not about things that might take the shine off whatever neat thing they want to include in their fic.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Or they might just not be into that part of it.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I don't need all the fine details of something in a fic. If I want to learn about tattoo aftercare (or any other subject), fanfic is not going to be my go-to source.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
DA

It's not about fanfic being a source on a subject. It's about not being thrown completely out of the fic by biology, physics, and history being completely wrong in a contemporary fic.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a personal problem. Maybe stick to pro fic?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Professionals also often do a half-assed job. And it feels weird to imply that amateurs aren't expected to be good just because it's fanfiction.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Good" and "thorough" aren't the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. But it's one thing to leave out details you don't want to focus on and another thing to write a story where the reader is "thrown completely out of the fic by biology, physics, and history being completely wrong" like that one anon said. I don't consider that good.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, you really twisted that around!

I'm not saying amateurs can't be great. Just that you might be better off with pro fic if you get "completely thrown out" of a fic because of minor details because, yeah, most fic writers can't be bothered. They're in it for the feels, which is perfectly valid in an of itself.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't think this secret was so much about info being "wrong" as... not being there in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, a lot of "legit" writers don't.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I've never had a tattoo, but I thought this was common knowledge.

But then there's a lot of things I think are common knowledge that fic writers get wrong ...

(NO, spn fandom, if you walk up to an ER bleeding from a bullet wound, they won't kick you out if you don't have insurance. Not in the US. They can only kick you out once you're treated and stable, hence why people with NO INSURANCE and no money go to the ER for ridiculous things - they have to be treated, and if they don't have money, the hospital just has to foot the bill.)

YES PLEASE. More realistic everything about tattooing in fic would be nice.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
(Just realized this says "media" not "fic" specifically.)

More detail would be nice, but unless it's integral to the plot, I'm fine with it not being there. I mean, I don't want a Star Wars movie to go into 10 mins of explanation about a starship's exhaust ports unless I need to know later on. There's only so much space in a story, and it has to be used judiciously.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
meanwhile I'm over here wondering how prevalent the actual act of getting a tattoo is in media or fic that this is a repeat problem. and then I realize I probably don't actually want to know because it's probably soulmate AU or something.

Do you want fic recs?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Because I know a couple where the focus is tattoos and, if I recall correctly, there is aftercare.

I once researched how to get a tattoo over a scar and I found out how long you have to wait after you get the scar and had to change the fic but it worked out fine. Someone who had a tattoo over a scar sent me a picture of it and it was really nice of them.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-28 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
...does that do it for you? Because I think tattoo aftercare is boring as hell. I take it seriously but every time I'm just bidding my time until it's over and done with and I can show off my spiffy new tattoo.

For people who don't know

(Anonymous) 2018-11-30 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I just read that it consists of putting Aquaphor on the tattoo for a few days mostly.

There is a clear bandage over it for the first few hours and then it has some soreness maybe a little scabbing. You aren't supposed to go swimming for a few weeks.

It seems pretty trivial tbh.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-15 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
i got a tattoo on my lower calf down to my ankle and broke my ankle the very same evening

now i'm having to ask around tattoo artists to see if they can fix the line work, because a lot of the tat scabbed over while in the cast and there's patches where it's just skin, no ink.
