Yeah, the whole ending of this episode fell flat for me. There was no consequences for that guy, either--not necessarily for shooting the spider, but even for dumping all that garbage and causing the problems in the first place. He didn't lose a single cent and an ounce of standing. It was very anticlimactic, after a promising build-up.

"the suits in charge suffer pretty much zero consequences for whatever suffering they cause" is one of those parables of the modern age, alas

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
...which is why fictional media usually has a different ending that's about righting that injustice.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

It's a parable of the modern age, yes, but it's somewhat antithetical to Doctor Who as a show, isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Exactly. That's why the ending felt weird to me, too.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I mean this isn't the first time something like this has happened.

Maybe the Doctor just doesn't deal well with spiders.

I'm British. I found it a bit corny and forced but, when I sat back and thought about it, I was pleased about the image it portrayed as a show aimed at children. I think kids could do a lot worse than to follow this advice. I'm for it.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
You think it's important for kids to learn that if an animal is badly wounded and dying, it's better to let it suffer slowly instead of giving it a quick, relatively painless death?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Just for people to put their fucking guns away.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
... but the point is that sometimes, there are good uses for guns. Such as putting a dying animal out of its misery, as opposed to letting it suffer.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Which can only be achieved by guns, gotcha.

*Americans*. Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The show didn't exactly come up with any viable alternatives despite having a magical alien in a magical box with a magical sonic screwdriver. Remember, their brilliant idea that was considered more humane was to lock up all the smaller spiders in a panic room and... and what? What do you think is going to happen to them without a source of food or escape route?

The suffering animal was right there, and dangerous to approach. And there was a gun handy. This isn't about being American, it's about being practical and not letting one's pure, noble ideals get in the way of helping the suffering animal in the only way you can - by giving it a quick death as opposed to a long, painful one.

Same. I know the UK doesn't have all the distorted views created by US gun culture, but they have farmers! And vets! Plenty of people who could explain to the writers that it's not always kind or healthy to sit around making sad eyes while an animal dies a "natural death."

And if your white American guy runs around knee-jerk shooting when he's angry/scared, and the only consequence is that he's accidentally merciful, that's a whole tower of Unfortunate Implications right there.

Thirded.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
No kidding.

Swing and a miss, IMO. Also, we all know those smaller spiders are eating each other until the last one standing starves to death.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
This Brit agrees with you. Sadly I've seen people dismiss the "spiders will starve to death" as "it's just a kid's show anyway stop thinking about it" and "it's a natural death!" so yeah.

That's not Chris Noth, is it?

Yes. He's old now.
