Drinking Scotch!

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I want to give Scotch whisky another chance. I tried Dewars once and didn't like it but I got a random...I don't know if craving is the right word? I wanna try it again. Any Scotch drinkers out there with recs?

I also like: kraken rum, woodford reserve bourbon, brandy, and gin of pretty much any kind. If that helps.

I'm not big into Scotch, but even so, Ardbeg 10-year was a life-altering experience. I never knew it could be like that.

I recommend adding a tiny splash of water and letting it sit 10 minutes in the glass.

A+ taste in kraken, anon

I'm not good with scotch, I don't know quality from shit like I do with rum, but I got treated to something that was apparently aged 12 years and I didn't even notice the taste, so I'm going to suggest something aged. they're expensive, though.

So. This will be mostly about single malt whisky.
Something you may want to be careful around is anything that's strongly peated. That's a very acquired taste and definitely not for everyone. So most Islay Whiskys should be treated carefully because they tend to be heavily peated. (If someone tries to make you drink Laphroaig, be prepared for the taste of a freshly tarred road.)

I don't know about the availability/price range of most brands where you live. Based on your other preferences, I think Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban would be a nice one because it's kept in Bourbon casks and finished in Port casks. It's fairly expensive though. But in general, Glenmorangie is a solid brand.

Glenfarclas 10 year is nice as well to start out with. Since it's a fairly young one, it's usually not that expensive either.
Same goes for Edradour 10 year but it's probably more expensive because it's a pretty small distillery.

One brand that gets named a lot for starting out with single malt is Glenlivet but it tends to be a bit boring if not used to scotch. But to try it, the 12 year might be alright (I prefer the 18).

Agreed. I drink a lot of fairly generic stuff with mixers but the good stuff is definitely the Islay ones.
