Little non-fandom things that annoy you...

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
When people say "I'm a people pleaser", what that generally means is "I'm a doormat". Because with the exception of sociopaths and assholes, MOST people enjoy it when they're able to make (deserving) people happy. "People pleaser" means you're taking it to an unhealthy degree at your own expense, or at the expense of others in order to placate someone who's probably an undeserving asshat.

I hate bicyclists who ride in the streets. I know they're not necessarily FOR that but I think where there are sidewalks, they should be on them, unless you're somewhere like New York where the sidewalk traffic is insane. I just hate in my spread-out, half-rural town, there are cyclists on the street slowing down traffic and they don't even pay road taxes. I know this is unreasonable orz

I'm pushing 30, and I'm just now realizing being "a people pleaser" has done a number on my personality/relationships. I'm working to fix my shit, but yeah, IA. We mean well, but it's not healthy or wise.

How do people survive winter without central heating?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean it's only 10C but I'm freezing. I want a kotatsu like they have in Japan.

Re: How do people survive winter without central heating?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Fires, blankets, hot soup and hot drinks, and body heat

Re: How do people survive winter without central heating?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably by living in more temperate climates, staying close to the sources of heat they do have, and wearing more layers.

I'd love a kotatsu but getting one would be a terrible idea for me because I'd probably fall asleep at the table all the time, ruining what little non-cramped back muscles I possess.

It doesn’t even get that cold here, but I’d still like a kotatsu.

You get used to it. For most of my life, I lived in places where 10C was a warm day, t-shirt and shorts weather.

If you're really struggling with it being cool, look for ways to minimize this. Hot showers to keep your body temperature up. Get up and move around to keep your extremities warm. Make sure what you're wearing covers as much skin as possible (so, pants, shirt, socks, slippers, maybe a hat) to minimize heat loss.

I grew up with two kerosene heaters. We would also pin blankets over the doorways so all the heat would stay in the living room/kitchen. When we went to bed we froze until being under our blankets warmed up. I also used to get dressed under my blankets for school because it was so cold in my bedroom I could see my breath.

Get a small jar candle, put it under a clay pot, and put the pot up on a couple of small, flat tiles, so it's elevated about an inch off the floor. Put that under your desk or in a small room where you spend a lot of time, and it will actually generate a lot of heat.

Alternately - electric blanket on the bed, electric throw on your lap, lots of layers, plastic on the windows and open the curtains/blinds on sunny days for the 'greenhouse' effect.

I'd say a space heater, but they tend to be very hard on the electric bill.

Good luck!

Put on a sweater? Lol. 10C seems like nothing to me, I live in a place where 10F is a good day in the winter.

Kotatsu are pretty nice (I lived in Japan for several years) but you could always just get a little space heater, too. For 10C, that should really be plenty, and they are pretty inexpensive, too.

Thank you for the advices! I'm going to try them ASAP.

I live in coastal southern California so the lowest it ever gets is a couple degrees above freezing maybe two or three days out of the year for a couple hours overnight. The low tonight is 48, so barely below 10C. I just use a blanket with my comforter at night and wear a sweater. I’ve got a woodstove for heating that I barely ever use.

Re: How do people survive winter without central heating?

Wow, that's only 50 degrees F. I live somewhere that consistently drops below freezing at night in winter, sometimes down to the single digits. And that's not even THAT cold by some peoples' standards!

If you're staying put in once place most of the day, consider investing in a personal space heater. The current ones on the market can be very efficient and relatively quiet. Wear warm layers and don't skip on nice thick socks and a pair of house slippers. Eat regular meals - low blood sugar can lead to feeling cold. In between meals, hot beverages like tea can help keep you warm. And occasionally get up and move around to get your blood circulation going again.

When I have trouble keeping my feet warm while I’m sitting down or sleeping, I use a couple hot water bottles. Except the squishy rubber bag kind seem to cool off pretty fast because they don’t hold a large enough volume of water. So I just reuse the 1.25 liter plastic bottles I buy carbonated water in, and refill them with the hottest tap water I can. Then I tuck them under the covers by my feet when I’m getting ready for bed.

Gallon jugs work better if I’m sitting at a desk or table and I just put one by my feet and rest them on top of the jug, preferably with a blanket over my legs. I sometimes get up the next morning and they’ll still be warm from the night before. Then my cat takes over and sleeps on top of the bottles. Make sure the bottles or jugs have screw on rather than pop top lids so you don’t get water everywhere.

Good Omens (???)

(Anonymous) 2018-12-02 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched the trailer as it was bundled with some others and I have a question. I haven't read the book (yes, I know a lot of people like it, but it's not for me) and I don't think I'll watch this, but what in the terrible-hair is going on with their styling? Are they supposed to look like that?

For reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZSXlNRRoGU

Depends on which regrettable hair you're talking about, but I think it's meant to reflect the passage of time since the two main characters have been around for centuries.

What is your favorite location in any video game?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't have to be your fav game specifically, just your favorite places in a game.

Drinking Scotch!

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I want to give Scotch whisky another chance. I tried Dewars once and didn't like it but I got a random...I don't know if craving is the right word? I wanna try it again. Any Scotch drinkers out there with recs?

I also like: kraken rum, woodford reserve bourbon, brandy, and gin of pretty much any kind. If that helps.
