Re: Tumblr to ban all adult content this month

tbh it depresses me to see people moving to Insta or Twitter. Ignoring that those are even worse for written content than Tumblr was, I feel like fandom as a whole continues to never learn. Insta and Twitter don't care about you any more than Tumblr does. If anything the lessons of Tumblr's fall, of lj's decline, is that the safest place for fandom content is platforms created by fans. Dreamwidth and Pillowfort are really the better options but no, let's all migrate to another soulless corporate platform that only cares about how to mine your personal data and will fuck fandom over if it helps the bottom line.

I never got into Tumblr because it didn't seem very discussion focused. Insta or Twitter seems even worse. Maybe I'm just not adapting to the times and all, but my idea of fandom isn't only sharing images, it's having good, in-depth discussions and I don't see how anything outside of blog communities or message boards can do that. Since DW is basically non-existent and I won't go back to LJ, I guess I've just got Reddit left.

Twitter has many, many, many flaws but an inability to have in depth discussions isn't really one of them? I mean, it's slightly awkward but it's definitely not impossible, even if you specifically want to keep it on the TL and not DMs. It's mostly a question of finding the right people.

The problem is that fans are generally not actually good at understanding what fans want from social networks, and then actually creating those social networks.

We should absolutely try to build and migrate to non-corporate platforms. But being non-corporate is not in and of itself enough, and Mastodon, Pillowfort, Dreamwidth, etc are not genuine alternatives to existing social platforms for that specific reason. Just wanting them to be good enough doesn't mean that they are.
