As for the series, I think it went downhill when they used the series to create "pilots" for a spin-off. I love Amanda, but the spin-off series was missing some spark.
For me, "Highlander" will always be the first movie and the series up until the two-part special with "The Four Horsemen", although it was nice to see Tessa again in the finale.

I haven't watched the latest movie yet, but I kind of want to. I like bad movies.
The series of failed pilot episodes... that was in Highlander's final season, wans't it? For me, the series jumped the shark a little earlier. I was not really watching anymore by then. X_x I sort of gave up after Richie was killed... I think that was the moment for me.
Not necessarily because he was killed, but how. I disliked that the show suddenly introduced stuff like... demons? the end of the world? evil itself? This fantasy stuff that has not had any part in the Highlander mythology.
It started earlier, really, when Cassandra first appeared and there were prophecies and witchcraft and stuff, but that was easy to ignore because that was just one episode, it was easy to pretend it didn't happen. But when Richie died, resulting in Duncan to be depressed for the rest of the series, it became impossible to ignore, it was always a lingering presence and not the Highlander I'd liked.
Highlander is so very choose-your-own-canon!

*looks up (http://epguides.com/Highlander/)* Yeah, the three episode arc where Richie died was the end of the fifth season/ beginning of the sixth season. So we're picking around the same point.
I think the problem with further movies was the first one opened and closed the whole mythos so perfectly. Each subsequent movie had to nullify the end of the previous one to make things continue. Connor was the last immortal, oops, one more. Connor was the last immortal, oops, one more.
With the series, they only backed up a little, and at least they picked a new central character. The first movie was largely respected by the series. But then when Duncan joined Connor in the fourth movie, they disrespected the series canon for the movie. That bugged me.
*snort* Anyway, once upon a time "Highlander" was one of my favorite series. It's a shame they couldn't ended it a little sooner. It would have been nice to end it on a relative up note.
