Re: Things people say that drive you nuts

Not anymore, but as a kid I hated being told that I'd like looking young someday.

Being mistaken for your friend's little sister is humiliating. Yes, I actually do like it now that I'm in my thirties, but it wasn't fun being twelve and easily passing for eight or nine years old.

I totally understand! It was the same for me. And now I'm turning 30 next week and someone actually thought that I was my little sister's little sister and it was nice. But STILL.

(But on the other hand, I'm also a cashier and younger people act so indignant when I ask them for ID. People, you don't suddenly look 35 when you turn 18.)

so they weren't wrong...

It doesn't drive me nuts now, but when I was eleven and being mistaken for seven or eight, it definitely wasn't any comfort to me.

I very much understand the impulse to comfort. But I think unfortunately there's not really any way to comfort a kid once you've crushed them by guessing they're several years younger than they are. Instead, my policy is just 1) never guess a kid's age, or always guess high. And 2) if they ask you if they look their age, always say yes, or tell them they look slightly older, even if it's a fib.

I’m almost thirty and it still drives me nuts. I feel like people don’t take me seriously unless I wear heels and dress up in really formal, boring clothing.

I understand this. I'm 31, and the way people talk to me can sometimes really piss me off. People (especially men, but also sometimes women) can be so patronizing and condescending. They talk to me like I don't know my own mind, and don't understand the complexities of life, or something. Like I probably haven't really thought much about any of the complicated, adult things they think about. Women tend to be better about correcting themselves once they find out I'm 31 not 21, but men (excluding gay men, who are generally really good about not doing this) tend to default to talking to me as though I were the age I look, not the age I am.

My workplace is mainly women and the ones on the much older side are very “bless your heart” condescending when I express my opinions or give them suggestions. It’s so hard to be polite and professional when they treat me like a kid and don’t speak to me like an adult.

Plus, there is no guarantee that you will always look younger. My best friend went from being late twenties and looking like a teen to being early thirties and looking like she was in her forties thanks to a horrible and unexpected combination of health issues.
