In the context of fandom (generally): "You shouldn't write for reviews anyway."

I don't. However, it's definitely a waste of time when I spend time writing, formatting and posting, only for no one to review.

I write for myself, but posting also takes work. And really, even writing something no one reads feels pointless. It's also disheartening. Was my timing just bad? Or was the story really bad? I want to know.

Also, isn't the whole point of art to show it to people?

I've dropped out of a couple of tiny fandoms because I wasn't getting reviews. Guest kudos, sure (on non-smutty fics!) but no interaction, no-one I can squee with. It's disheartening. I moved on to other small fandoms in which I get a bit of interaction.

I agree. People always say "You should write for yourself." Maybe I should, but if I put it up on the internet it's because I want other people to read it.

Yup. And while I don't write for reviews, I do write to make people happy. And if I don't get revies or even kudos, I feel like that fic didn't make people happy.

honest query from a fellow ficcer: when you say reviews, do you actually mean someone reviewing and potentially critting your fic, or do you just mean comments? I've never been clear on this and some people seem to say reviews when they mean comments.

I honestly don't give a shit if someone *reviews* my fic, like their comment on my fic is going to sway or dissuade other people from reading it the way movie reviews are how people discern whether to see said movie. I'm aware that opinions vary by the individual on whether they want crit or don't and there's no real way to know when you read a fic if the author craves feedback or doesn't care. honestly, the one thing I miss about y!gallery is being able to tag your art crit welcome/don't crit/I don't care about crit, that'd be great to have as a tickybox on AO3

I feel you, anon. I write for myself and it’s fun, but damn if I don’t want an ego boost now and then or just someone to talk fandom with.

I bet you don't use them correctly. People who get snobby over "good vs. well" almost never actually know the difference. Ditto for "I vs. me."

Not anymore, but as a kid I hated being told that I'd like looking young someday.

Being mistaken for your friend's little sister is humiliating. Yes, I actually do like it now that I'm in my thirties, but it wasn't fun being twelve and easily passing for eight or nine years old.

I thought of another one. My boss at work says may-sure instead of meh-sure. Considering we deal with a lot of measuring clothes, he says it a lot. Not sure where he is from originally but I expect it is just a dialect thing.

Half the time someone uses the word "pretentious" anymore it doesn't have any real meaning. The word has become in itself pretentious!
