People that say 'adulting' or use adult as a verb.

Oh christ I hate that so much, like it just sets my teeth on edge. There's a stupid TV advert over here for Kinder Bueno and it's got adults in it literally singing 'ADULTING' while describing mundane adult tasks that they need to do and it's so fucking cringey I hate it, and it makes part of my soul die.

I have seen that advert. It makes me despair for human kind.

I HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.

Agreed.

I don't understand this at all. I say "Good adulting, self," all the time as a way of patting myself on the back, and it works. It makes me feel good about the thing I've accomplished, even if it's just a small thing.

I've struggled with major depression and anxiety since my early teens, and I spent most of my twenties stalled, not learning to do all the "adult" stuff most twenty-somethings are learning to do. For a long time it felt hopeless, like I'd never be able to manage even half the things required of adults. So now that I'm doing better, it is genuinely satisfying to me when I pay all my bills on time and manage my credit cards well, and buy myself a mattress, and make myself meals that are actually kind of good for me, and buy batteries and light bulbs and dish soap so that I'll have those things when I need them, and all that stuff. Yeah, good job, self. Good adulting.

That is great for you. Doesn't change how I feel about the word but how I feel about a word should not affect you.

I mean, I was inviting you to elaborate. But if you'd rather not, okay.

I just don't like the word? It sounds stupid. Especially when people use it for stupid shit that all adults do. Good for you, you called a doctor and made an appointment.

Fair enough.

Good for you, you called a doctor and made an appointment.

I mean, good for you for not struggling with it (not even saying that in a snarky way, just, good for you). But that stuff is hard for some people. Whether they're diagnosed with something or they're not, it can feel like too much. A never ending deluge. Like that super internet-famous Hyperbole And A Half comic, the "This is Why I'llNever Be An Adult" one.

See I am fine with people being proud they are able to do something that took them a long time to do. I didn't start driving until I was 28.

If someone with social anxiety told me, "I was able to get over that fear to call a doctor." I'd be happy for them.

If they told me, "I did some great adulting today and called a doctor." I'd roll my eyes at them.

nayrt

I mean...it's your right to dislike a term. But so many people I know with social anxiety and other mental health issues use it. It seems...ungracious to insist that those people have to avoid a term that might make it more light hearted and easier to voice aloud in order to avoid your contempt.

Thanks for being empathetic anon. This is really understanding and kind.

Where did I say people can't use it? Can you link it?

AYRT

I agree with what the anon above me says. I am not the anon below me.

Good for you, you were a prick. Maybe grow up and take the entire tree out of your ass before you choke on it.

That is not very adulting of you!

I've mostly seen it used in a somewhat mocking or joking way, so it doesn't really bother me.
