Re: Things people say that drive you nuts
(Anonymous) 2018-12-09 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)I've struggled with major depression and anxiety since my early teens, and I spent most of my twenties stalled, not learning to do all the "adult" stuff most twenty-somethings are learning to do. For a long time it felt hopeless, like I'd never be able to manage even half the things required of adults. So now that I'm doing better, it is genuinely satisfying to me when I pay all my bills on time and manage my credit cards well, and buy myself a mattress, and make myself meals that are actually kind of good for me, and buy batteries and light bulbs and dish soap so that I'll have those things when I need them, and all that stuff. Yeah, good job, self. Good adulting.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-10 12:05 am (UTC)(link)Fair enough.
Good for you, you called a doctor and made an appointment.
I mean, good for you for not struggling with it (not even saying that in a snarky way, just, good for you). But that stuff is hard for some people. Whether they're diagnosed with something or they're not, it can feel like too much. A never ending deluge. Like that super internet-famous Hyperbole And A Half comic, the "This is Why I'llNever Be An Adult" one.
Re: Things people say that drive you nuts
If someone with social anxiety told me, "I was able to get over that fear to call a doctor." I'd be happy for them.
If they told me, "I did some great adulting today and called a doctor." I'd roll my eyes at them.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-10 06:24 am (UTC)(link)I mean...it's your right to dislike a term. But so many people I know with social anxiety and other mental health issues use it. It seems...ungracious to insist that those people have to avoid a term that might make it more light hearted and easier to voice aloud in order to avoid your contempt.
