Question

(Anonymous) 2018-12-11 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
So, I commissioned a homemade piece of furniture (building and painted). It should be done tomorrow and I am going to be picking it up. What do I do if it is hideous or not what I wanted? How do i politely tell them it is awful.

I would assume something like this they showed you plans/sketches/potentially in progress pics? If not, I don't know what to tell you. Suck it up and be polite? If it's something that can be altered relatively simply, maybe say something like, "It's almost like I imagined, but is there a chance we can change the colour?" or something?

Have they not been sending any sort of updates to you along the way? o_O

I'm with other anon...did you not discuss this with the person making it? Didn't they show you plans, sketches or anything like that? Didn't you pick out the color? I'm not sure why this would be such an unknown unless you told someone to build you a big blue chair and that's all the information you gave them.

It depends on how you commissioned it. Legally, you are allowed to criticize and expect better work if it defers from what you were expecting. But really, it you're ordering from a company whos business is to create furniture, then by all means send it back. (nine times out of ten they will appease whatever concerns you have, so long as you're persistent) If it's a lone person/business that you're buying from, it can be a lot more complicated. They might redesign their work by the love of their craft, but as it takes so much time and work to build such a thing they might be reluctant to do so...

Honestly, just check the records of the sale, their warranty/customer service standards. I assume the answer to your question is somewhere in there.
