Loki was not abused. Odin and Frigga were fine parents. Thor and Loki were treated equally except in the sense that Thor was the heir to the throne. Loki has a persecution complex a mile wide, but he was never treated badly on Asgard.

I can only emphatically agree with this, so much so that I'd like to print it out in bright neon letters and hold it over the Thor fandom.

I love Loki alright? Be he's a little shitbag and causes all his own problems, that's not the fault of his family.

Yup. I hated him for so long. I like him now, but as the little shit he is. He's fun. He's also got issues.

I liked him since Thor 1 since he's my kind of out-for-themselves-villain, but I got fed up of the fandom very quickly with how they babied him for straight-up trying to murder people because he was upset. Or blaming Thor for his behaviour, when he was clearly no worse than any other sibling to Loki.

Tbh the later movies do show-case Odin as not the greatest father, but frankly this just means that he was an ass to them both at times, not just Loki but fuck knows people ignored that.

100% agree!

Yeah, I didn’t hate Loki, but as someone who wasn’t and isn’t a big Thor or MCU fan, Loki fandom and fandom Loki got on my nerves really quickly. I like him better when he’s sort of unwillingly on the heroic side, and funny, and the films make jokes at his expense, rather than focusing on his “Kneel before me, puny mortals” schtick.

I guess the thing that really made me not hate him was showing in the later films that he cared for Frigga and Thor and even Odin. I always loathe villains who are all about self-aggrandizement and how important they are and how their wants trump (<—there’s a great example) everyone else’s. I’m way more likely to root for villains who have someone/something they’ll stop being selfish for, even for a little while.

Good god, I watched a slew of MCU films only because I stumbled onto Thor 3 and loved Loki in it. And Loki is still the bit I liked best out of all of them, because I really liked all his ridiculous layers and woobiefying him just seems to be making him intentionally boring, ffs.

You got to miss the wonders that was 'the Tesseract was mind-controlling poor baby Loki and nothing he did in Avengers was of his own doing' type 'meta' in the fandom, it was truly a spectacular time.

woobiefying him just seems to be making him intentionally boring

Thus is my issues with pretty much all villain woobification, it takes away what makes them goddamn interesting in the first place(in some cases as there are villains who are just flat-out dull).

Eh.

Wondering if Loki was playing the Chitauri so they'd go down in flames, while pretending to be their ally and possibly not entirely compos mentis while doing it makes that movie more fun for me. Sneaky and that. There's precedent with the Ice Giants, too.

And it explains that weird-ass speech about freedom in Stuttgart - he was selling a load of goods to possible eavesdroppers.

Each to their own headcanon, though.

I agree with all of this except I think MCU Odin wasn’t a great father to Loki or Thor. But “not a great father” =/= abusive.

Fandom never seems to realize that bad parenting isn’t always abuse.

I can grant him having issues over finding out he wasn't ethnically Asgardian and his parents hadn't told him, but I wouldn't consider that abuse and it doesn't excuse his actions much.

I think his family treated him just fine but I'm not so sure about the Warriors Three. But that probably would have been more along the lines of mutual dislike.

I don't think he was abused, but *something* had to be going on for him to feel, since he was quite young (and don't they live for a long, long time, aren't Loki and Thor both hundreds of years old?) for him to feel as if he were no favored, or loved as much, or something.

IDK, even Odin seemed to admit he'd fucked up in regards to Loki. I don't think that means he was abused, but favortism is a hell of a thing. And Thor was clearly the Favorite.
