What controversial fandom opinions do you have?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-15 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Got any opinions/interpretations on a story that goes again fandom consensus? Bonus points if it even goes against Word of God.

I don't for one minute believe the idea that some '80s style slasher movie directors have insisted that the "virgin survives" trope is unintentional (the same one mocked in Cabin in the Woods).
I think "muggle" is derogatory.
I think a lot of TV writers have a problem with women in authority.
I think the British version of the Office is funnier than the US one.
I think Dancing with Myself and I Touch Myself are songs about masturbating.
I think Blueblood is Luna's son.
I think the Great Pumpkin was intended to be an in joke about religious differences, even though Schulz said it wasn't.
I think Velma is probably straight because very few lesbians would let Fred order them around.

Oh man, so agree with you on tv writers and women in authority. Even when a woman is the boss, she always has to show deference to a man in some way or be shown to be weak in some way.

I think it was probably intentional for some, but not for all?

I think "muggle" is derogatory.

How?

I Touch Myself IS about masturbation.

And I never thought about Velma as a straight girl but now I think your opinion is the correct one.

Oh the Dyvinals (Yes, I know I probably fucked up the spelling of the band name) have long admitted I Touch Myself is about masturbation.

Loki was not abused. Odin and Frigga were fine parents. Thor and Loki were treated equally except in the sense that Thor was the heir to the throne. Loki has a persecution complex a mile wide, but he was never treated badly on Asgard.

I can only emphatically agree with this, so much so that I'd like to print it out in bright neon letters and hold it over the Thor fandom.

I love Loki alright? Be he's a little shitbag and causes all his own problems, that's not the fault of his family.

I agree with all of this except I think MCU Odin wasn’t a great father to Loki or Thor. But “not a great father” =/= abusive.

I can grant him having issues over finding out he wasn't ethnically Asgardian and his parents hadn't told him, but I wouldn't consider that abuse and it doesn't excuse his actions much.

I think his family treated him just fine but I'm not so sure about the Warriors Three. But that probably would have been more along the lines of mutual dislike.

I don't think he was abused, but *something* had to be going on for him to feel, since he was quite young (and don't they live for a long, long time, aren't Loki and Thor both hundreds of years old?) for him to feel as if he were no favored, or loved as much, or something.

Re: What controversial fandom opinions do you have?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-16 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
IDK, even Odin seemed to admit he'd fucked up in regards to Loki. I don't think that means he was abused, but favortism is a hell of a thing. And Thor was clearly the Favorite.

Final Fantasy VII - JENOVA, not Sephiroth, is the real villain and entity in control.

Re: What controversial fandom opinions do you have?

... wasn't that heavily implied if not outright stated?

The entire point, tho, is that Sephiroth has become the new Jenova. The OG even outright states that Jenova's pieces will converge on the main part of it, and the fact that the rest of the body goes to Sephiroth.....

I think "Word of God" is bullshit, or at least needs to be treated a lot more critically given how many authors are the progressive heroes of their own minds.

Not sure if it goes against fandom consensus, but I don’t like Jack on Supernatural, I really didn’t like Kelly Kline, and I hate Sam, Dean, and Cas being dads.

Some slash tropes are kinda creepy in how they handle gay/bi men, and it's not necessarily misogynist to be uncomfortable with some of it.

Final Fantasy VII: Aerith was a terribly bland character and I'm glad she died early on.

Final Fantasy VIII: The switch from Squall's "Whatever" attitude towards Rinoa over to "Omg true love, can't live without her!!" was way too abrupt and the way everyone kept pressuring him to hook up with her despite him showing no interest was kinda creepy.

Final Fantasy XV: The "romance" was incredibly forced in this one as well. No matter how many times they told the player that it was actually true love, it never actually came across that way. I think they should have just kept it as a "It's a political marriage and we're friends so that's okay, I guess" thing. I also don't like that Ignis, Gladio and Promoto survived.

spoilers for FFXV

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Ouran High School Host Club aren't the Holy Grail of post-90's anime. They're average stories with the same character tropes and other issues that their fans complain about in other anime.

Liking animation for the story is dumb. It's all about how well the animation and visuals deliver the characterization and world that matters.
