Who are they and why?

Molly Weasley. To call her a good mother is fucking laughable. Just because she's nice to Harry and occasionally shows warmth doesn't change the nearly-brazen neglect that she subjects the rest of her brood to. I hate it, and I hate that I'm supposed to accept her as some paragon of motherhood that should be aspired to.

sa: oops, I only saw the "least favorite" part, haha. I have too many favorites! But I suppose if I had to pick one, it'd be Luna. She's so supportive and helps people come out of their shells, and she's so cute.

Oh my god, thank you. I can't stand Molly, she's a terrible mother and it's so obvious that the children are unhappy but think of it as the norm. (But Bill and Charlie got jobs as far away as possible from her as soon as they graduated, Percy went all in trying to please her, the twins went the extreme opposite way right until Percy ditched the family [honestly, I really don't blame him] and then they turned around and began flat out trying to buy Molly's affections which, not to her credit, looked like it was working. Ron just bummed about with a massive inferiority complex and coasted through life and Ginny got great at sliding under the radar to avoid drawing her attention in negative ways. And Arthur was always working late and hardly ever home. I think everyone there, including Molly, was desperately unhappy, but no one really realized they didn't have to be.)

Damn, man.

I agree 100%. She treats Hermione shamefully. And she acts like she's Harry's mother in terms of wanting to get to control what he hears and does, which is not cool. And she treats Arthur kind of terribly too. Then again, Arthur wasn't amazing either.

Honestly, just, the Weasleys in general. I know JK wanted them to be this idealized, amazing family. But they just didn't appeal to me. I like certain Weasleys. But as a whole, the whole vibe of the family was not as amazing and healthy as the author wants us to think.

You're kind of seeing them from Harry's perspective in the book though. Any family probably looks good compared to the Dursleys.

The fact that she fell for the bullshit in that article and acted spiteful toward a fucking child is beyond.

I took the Weasleys to be an example of the "Not rich in money or material possessions, but rich in love and warmth" kind of families (like the Cratchit family in A Christmas Carol), as a contrast to the Dursleys, who were better off financially (not rich, but solidly middle-class, although the extent to which this was a matter of having more money or fewer children is debatable) cared a great deal about appearances and material things, but treated Harry abominably and weren't doing a great job raising Dudley. The Weasleys can certainly be flawed and still provide that contrast, but the books don't peg the flaws as flaws, which suggests they are not to be seen as flawed and the result is pretty uninspiring.

I agree completely.

Favorite is Professor McGonagall. Don't really got a least favorite.

Ernie MacMillan - I found his pompousness absolutely hilarious. I wish we saw more of him.

Also Ron bc I like his straightforwadness.

I don't feel strongly enough against any character, I guess Sirius is a bit annoying.

Favorites: Neville, Mcgonagall, Luna, Hermione, Hagrid, Tonks

Least favorites: Molly, Pettigrew, Fudge, Snape

I always liked Dobby and Firenze and thought it was weird and shitty that there wasn't any closure on the problem of intelligent non-humans being treated like animals or slaves.

Still very much dislike Snape.

OMG, yes. I mean, I get there was a war going on. But still. The books made it seem as if Hermione's instincts, not just her methods, were wrong. And then we were supposed to look at Kreacher as a balance to Dobby and think that maybe elf slaver is fine? I don't know, bothered me. It was nice to find out outside the book that Hermione still fought for non-human rights in her career. But it would have been nice to see more of it in the books.

Favourites: Luna, because she was the one I identified with most as a kid. Neville, because there were bits of those books where he felt like the single most rational, solid thing there. Snape, because his was the story/character arc I was most interested in among the older generation, even if I didn't really like where it ended up going in the end (Lily, specifically).

Least favourites: Honestly, most of the characters I didn't like I also didn't really care about all that much. The character that still gets the most complicated emotional response from me, though, was Dumbledore. He just ... as you aged with the books and looked at him in hindsight, pretty much all his flaws and justifications do make sense for who he is and was. They just really hurt a lot at the time.

Also, and this is likely blasphemy, but Dobby. Mostly because pretty much all the story arcs around him were just painful for me. The whole issue of house elves was one I just started to hate more and more as we went on, and Dobby's evolution/devolution into a tragic, pathetic martyr just wasn't a plot I enjoyed.

Favorite is probably Luna. I'm not sure if I have a least favorite but I'm not fond of Draco Malfoy and by the end I didn't like Dumbledore a whole lot either.

Favorites: Harry bc a lot of reasons. Ron bc he's refreshingly regular in a series overflowing with Super Cool Characters. Snape pre-DH because I thought he had the most interesting character/arc of the older generation characters. Krum bc he's just genuinely cool and nice, despite being surrounded by dark wizards and being a major celebrity.

Least Favorites: Molly for the reasons stated above. Dumbledore, for similar reasons. Umbridge and Pettigrew bc no shit. Bellatrix bc I found her really ott and not in an entertaining or believable way. Lupin bc, despite how cool I thought he was when I was younger, I now realize that he was a classic shitty absentee "cool relative" type, who was only around for Harry when it was convenient and who put in less than the bare minimum of effort into their relationship.

Major Mixed Feelings: Hermione. She was one of my faves as a kid, but now I don't like how awful she is to the people around her. She's very much like a mini Molly in how she treats Ron, Harry, Neville, the house-elves, even Ginny and Luna and others. Like bc she's so smart she automatically knows best. It's a very realistic character flaw, but by and large the books don't actually acknowledge it.

It leaves the impression that JKR isn't aware that it's not okay to act like Molly or Hermione. (And wow, I just realized that Ron/Hermione is the 'marrying his mother' trope which is horrible on so many levels.)

Many characters in HP are colored by Harry's perceptions of them. People like Molly and Lupin seem really awesome if you view them through the eyes of an orphan with a horrible abusive family. But I have to wonder how different they and many other characters would seem if you were seeing them from the perspective of someone like Cedric or Tonks, who seem to be more well-adjusted.

With Snape, I can see that he's an interesting character. He's terrible, but terrible can be interesting. And, if he didn't remind me of some abusive teachers I had so much, I'd probably like him as a character. But as it is, he brings up bad memories, so I just can't do Snape.

Favorites: Luna because I related to her, even though as I got older I realized it was more that I wished I related to her (I was weird and had almost no friends, but I was incredibly self-conscious where Luna wasn't). Neville because I always love characters who start out wimpy and become strong.

Least favorites: Ginny. I thought she was cute in Chamber of Secrets and could potentially be a favorite, but she became boring in the following books and slightly annoying in the last couple. And every so often some bullshit feminist thinkpiece about how she's an amazing feminist icon and unfairly hated female character because she dates lots of boys. Nice try but that doesn't make a female character amazing and has nothing to do with why most of us don't like her.

I like the heroes and I hate Snape and Draco
