Phil isn't giving you a heads up. She's being slightly judgy about why you decided to stop watching a show you weren't enjoying because she thinks your reasons are flawed.

Honestly didn't realize the OP had only started watching this season. A lot of season 11 haters are long time fans just looking for reasons to hate this season. OP never said anything about only just starting the show.

OP didn't say anything hateful, either. It's rather uncharitable of you to assume OP was making their decision in bad faith. I'm not sure what in the secret warrants that.

Re: OP

Agreed. Some people have hard stops when it comes to shows. Maybe a favourite character dies. Maybe it has one too many 'kill the puppies' moments. It's cool to nope out of a show that you no longer enjoy watching, and as a fan of the show, nothing in the secret seemed negative about the show, just that this wasn't the kind of thing that OP wanted to watch.

Exactly. OP was actually complimentary about the show, it's clear that it's just not their thing. And that's fine. I dislike it when fans of a show get defensive about someone who decides to stop watching for personal reasons and try to question them about it, as though that person needs to justify their decision to the rest of fandom.

I didn't say they made it in bad faith? Just that Doctor Who has always had this sort of episodes, and it would be strange for it to be a stopping point now for someone who had been watching the show. I get it now that I know they are a new viewer (although, Rosa kind of hits those buttons too).

Re: OP

Why bring "season 11 haters" and "long time fans just looking for reasons to hate" in this context, then? You clearly think that the whole fan-turned-hater thing might apply to OP, even though OP's given no indication that they were a long time fan.

Re: OP

IDK, it seems pretty reasonable to me? OP said "I stopped watching Doctor Who because of Thing X", where Thing X has existed throughout the history of Doctor Who, so it kinda makes sense to ask more about that

the issue has now been satisfactorily resolved and explained and everyone can move on

I thought they were someone who had been watching for a while. Which was a perfectly reasonable assumption to make when someone posts a secret about something they've watched and don't state they just started watching recently.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2018-12-28 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What? No. Plenty of people start new to them shows all the time. Wasn't the whole point of starting up Doctor Who in the first place? To attract a whole new audience as well as bring back long time fans? I'm like the OP in that I was curious about all the buzz with the new female Doctor and the show was on my list to try even though I've never watched it before.

But holy crap, if you can't even express an innocuous, civil negative opinion about it without fandom thinking it's totally reasonable to assume that you're a bitter long time fan spreading hate then maybe no thanks. I don't like fandom spaces where people think it's okay - REASONABLE, even! - to assume the worst about someone they don't know even when there's no evidence to support it.

You are reaching hard, anon. She asked how long they've watched because the show has been like this for a long time. OP made no mention of how long they watched, and the wording didn't come off as 'I just started watching'. OP clarified and it was fine.

It's you who wants to be bent out of shape about it. Take a breather.
