I see no problem with that. If you think about it, the older white guy being in the 'sidekick/support/companion' role to someone other than another-white-guy main character is pretty non-standard too.

I'm 100% down for more white guys who are officially sidekicks/supports/companion characters to minority leads.

Like who you like

as long as you don't do that thing where you use liking this character as an excuse to talk about how all the other characters actually suck and are terrible

"as long as you don't do that thing where you use liking this character as an excuse to talk about how all the other characters actually suck and are terrible"

There's not even a tiny hint of that in the secret. OP even says they're going to keep their preference to themselves. Why do people think they have to lecture other people for potential fandom no-nos just because someone, somewhere else has maybe done this?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-08 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I was trying to picture a reason in my head OP might be worried about it.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-08 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Er... does OP sound worried?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
They did to me. Maybe that was incorrect, but that's why I thought they'd "keep it to themselves".

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but I assumed they didn't want to harsh people's buzz about 13 and the diverse casting. And you don't have to tear other people's faves down to get flack about your own fave. This is fandom.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
They did to me, too. :)

DA

I've seen this response before, and it just seems needlessly defensive to me. The AYRT isn't lecturing - they're just tossing out hypotheticals to broaden the conversation, and to acknowledge that the issue has some complexity to it.

It's their way of making conversation, and giving the person they're talking to a considered reply.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Disagree. Imagine how tiresome it'd be if every innocuous thing you said was met with a remark that assumed you might do something shitty unless someone qualifies that it's not okay.

"I'm going out to the store to grab some milk!"
"Okay, just as long as you don't block the aisle with your cart and get in the 12 items and under line when you have 30 items!"

"I'm thinking about ordering pizza for dinner."
"That's cool, as long as you don't yell at the delivery guy and then stiff him on the tip."

"It's taco Tuesday at my grandma's house and I'm really psyched."
"That's fine, as long as you don't say racist stuff about Mexicans."

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Imagine how tiresome it'd be if every innocuous thing you said was met with a remark that assumed you might do something shitty unless someone qualifies that it's not okay.

But this is not some innocuous thing. This is a fandom secret. The person made it and sent it in because 1. They don't feel they can share it openly, and 2. They want people to discuss it.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. The whole point of Fandom Secrets is discussion.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Those are cogent points. But I for one am not particularly convinced that this is discussion. It's just telling someone "Okay, as long as you don't do [this crappy thing you never mentioned even wanting to do]!"

It's not opening up a conversation about what situations are and aren't okay, it's just interjecting this weird qualifier that may not even apply to the OP's situation at all, yet people are bringing it up anyway. I mean look:

"I'm thinking about ordering pizza for dinner."
"That's cool, as long as you don't yell at the delivery guy and then stiff him on the tip."

That's not a discussion about the tipping system in the U.S., customer service, what constitutes a fair minimum wage, or employment practices that allow employers to pay well below minimum wage with the expectations that their workers should be able to make up the remaining amount in tips. It's not a discussion at all. Like the original comment, it frames it as a personal admonition - as long as YOU don't do this bad thing. It takes an innocuous statement about ordering pizza (which contains no threat or being a bad customer) and puts it on the table as though the statement IS about being a bad customer.

That's what I find weird and slightly self righteous about the whole thing.

same. he was the one I was least excited for and thought I'd hate, but he's my favourite out of the three companions (the fact he can act much better than the other two is probably a big factor in that though tbh).

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
All of this. He seems to be the most developed, relatable, and gets some of the best lines of the companions. Ryan got more development in the New Year episode than the rest of the season.

Hey, nothing wrong with that! It's not like white guys are automatically bad, the only problem is when they're the only variety of hero character out there. Or when people find dumb reasons to elevate the cishet white dude at the expense of other characters, which it doesn't sound like you're doing, so you're good!

I like Graham a lot too. Maybe not my favorite, but he's kind and supportive and relatable and I liked his emotional arc through the season. You have good taste. :D

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's not a bad thing, Nonny.

The idea isn't that old white guys shouldn't be in things and that nobody's allowed to like them, the idea is that they shouldn't be the ONLY thing. That's it. That's all.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Graham's pretty awesome. I like Ryan and Yaz too, but Graham's my favorite of the three companions.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Same, OP. I adore Bradley Walsh (have since his Coronation Street days), but I actually stopped watching DW after the second or third of 13's episodes. Nothing against the actress, it's just... it's not the DW I'm into. Maybe the next Doctor will be more my style?

Don't worry, be happy

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I have only watch the first episode but he was fairly loveable in it. You're obviously not liking him just because he's a white man, thus I don't see anything wrong with your preference. Fandom is more fun when you freely squee about what you love anyway. So don't let anyone gives you crap for it. I'm sure there're other fans of him that'd be more than happy to interact with you.

I have only watchED.

He calls her "Doc" and carries sandwiches in his pockets just in case. I kind of love Graham as well.

Don't see a problem with this, as someone who is progressive, though white. The white dude is progressive himself. And he let his wife take the lead back when she was alive. His black wife. Honestly, Graham is a great role model for what white dudes should be like. So I think loving him fits with the current messages the show is giving us.

I've never watched Dr. Who so I don't know who the old guy is, but...

Isn't he the companion to the female Dr. Who? Wouldn't that mean that it's a reversal of the usual male Dr. and female companion pairing that happens a lot? Wouldn't that mean that the female audience is finally being catered to in some way? Is this what it's like to be catered to? Please cater to me more often then! :)
