Yeah, I feel like the concept was really cool, but good god. The Golden Compass was such a slog to read, and I have zero enthusiasm for the rest of the series

This is me. I only ever read Golden Compass, and it didn't interest me much, but I'll read daemon AUs like no one else. It's a super neat concept.

I loved Golden Compass when I first read it as a kid, but then the second book took way too long to come out, and by the time I finally got it, I had lost interest... :(

Same, OP!

I LOVE AND ADORE the concept of daemons, but Pullman's le edgy superior atheist thing irritates me, so I've only read the trilogy once tbh

That is so me. I had to read The Golden Compass for my children's literature class and I liked it. But then I read the rest of the trilogy, and ugh.

I wouldn't call it edgy superior atheist. Dawkins Pullman is not. I think HDM is anti-establishment more than anything else. Pullman has long-standing and legitimate beef with Vatican corruption and institutionalised abuse, which is fair enough.

The problem is that he’s as subtle as a neon yellow sledgehammer and it’s tiresome. It’s like if every Narnia book was written like The Last Battle, with the added benefit of having a completely unlikeable main character.

You found Lyra unlikeable? YMMV I guess. I thought she was refreshingly different. I liked the fact that she was a messy and sometimes morally grey, as children usually are.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Messy and morally gray wasn’t the problem. Bratty, selfish and generally unpleasant was. Obviously, your mileage does vary, and it is true that the world is full of selfish brats.

I agree with your description, but I also think that was intentional and done for a purpose. I freely admit I'm a Pullman fan though, so I expect I'm biased. Of course, if something doesn't work for you it just doesn't work.

I am an atheist and it gets on my nerves. Also his stuff always seems to have neat ideas and clunky execution, which doesn’t help.

That lion is so comically small

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Right? That's the first thing I noticed. Weren't daemons supposed to be the same size as the real animals?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's just because they edited the picture to fit.

Same, OP. I never could actually finish the first book in the series, though I tried, but I do really love the concept of daemons. I adore daemon AUs for all fandoms.
