Frollo looks like he’s possessed by a demon. (Which is probably how he’d justify it if you asked him.)

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the buttsex demon! Hey-ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

WOC

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, it stands for women of color. what's your quibble?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Acronyms are generally quite Google-able if you're confused, anon.

I want to discuss this seriously BUT I AM DISTRACTED BY HER VOLDEMORT NOSE.

Yes. When I think about it all of the white Disney women and princesses are clothed very modestly, and the others are often not. This and the creepy Jafar scene are both very sexualised.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Tiana and Mulan dress as modestly or moreso than Cinderella or Snow White, and Ariel's at least half naked for at least half of her movie.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Tiana might be an exception, but I remember that Mulan is naked in multiple scenes for plot reasons.

I don’t think Mulan counts as a princess, although I’ll give you Tiana.

(How sexualized would you say Moana is? Or Pocahontas? Maybe the newer princesses are less sexualized than the Disney Renaissance.)

The entire point of this particular scene was to be sexual, though, because Frollo has the hots for her. I mean, his entire song is about how much he desires her and the fact that it's at odds with his position and that she's a gypsy (and is therefore considered to be "lesser"). It's SUPPOSED to be sexual and uncomfortable because that is one of his key character points.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-13 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
It’s just the angle. She has a well defined nose in other shots.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I went through a phase where I read a lot of Frollo/Esmeralda fics, so I get it.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
there's that one disney medley with peter hollins that made me realise how insanely hot "hellfire" is sung by a young vaguely attractive man

i'm not even attracted to peter hollins it's just something about that song...

To be honest his solo song is extremely sexually charged, *especially* for a Disney film so it has never surprised me that people find this pairing at the very least intriguing.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Though in this case it's kind of undercut by Frollo really obviously blaming her for his behaviour?

Nope.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't make it less hot for me, but then I'm into the dub con/non con aspect of it.

I meant the over-sexualisation, not the erotically charged nature!

She's hot. I usually have to be attracted to both people to really be into a ship, though (at least a ship from a movie or tv, it isn't always the case with books).

(Anonymous) 2019-01-13 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I have to take some issue with her being one of the most overtly voluptuous Disney characters, but my id says "God, she's hot."

(Anonymous) 2019-01-13 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
See, I actually loved her because she totally owned her sex appeal. She was hot and she knew it and she wasn't afraid to flaunt it when it would benefit her. It was a refreshing change from all of the Disney princesses who were supposed to be beautiful yet at the same time somehow completely unaware of it/didn't care about it.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-13 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I can see where there's something worth discussing in the 'WOC being more sexualized' argument but on the other hand I feel like the argument is a bit unfair when it comes to Hunchback. Esmeralda is supposed to be sexy and desirable, and it's a plot point that Frollo has the hots for her. I feel like most of the princesses -- and even with the Jafar scene I would count Jasmine in this group -- are not really supposed to be actively trying to be sexy. Like Pocahontas is definitely sexualized in her design and that's a problem, but Pocahontas the character isn't trying to be sexy. Esmeralda, though, she's sexy and she knows she's sexy, she does sexy dances and enjoys herself and I would argue she shows more agency over her own sexuality than any other Disney girl save maybe Meg. If you took that part away from her she would be an entirely different character and Frollo's reaction to her would probably change as well. I would consider Esmeralda being sexualized hugely different from characters like Jasmine or Pocahontas, it's an integral part of her character and it's hard to remove that without ending up with a totally different character.

(I suppose the other way around this would be to follow the book and make her Actually White, which is its own mess of terrible implications.)

Anon from just above and this 100%. Yeah, she's sexy, but it's not a case of the creators just deciding to make her sexy for no good/logical reason, it's a case of "she as a character is sexy and knows it and makes a deliberate, conscious choice to play on it when she feels like it." It's a part of her character rather than just an executive decision on the part of the character designers.

Uhh;;...
Aside from the whole 'burn the witch' thing... 'Hot' is the very last thing I'd ever related to Frolo...

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, Frollo as he's drawn? Sure. But let's be honest, Tony Jay's voice could melt glaciers!
