this makes me wonder who other "warning characters" are (I always liked Holden)

I mean Tyler Dryden is the big one - I also hear to be wary of Tarantino fanbros (and I will admit while I do like Tarantino’s films he has a lot of toxic fans)

I'm a big film geek who loves Tarantino but every fandom has its jerks and crazies.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Of course - it’s less about fandom though and more about people who aren’t big film geeks, but love Tarantino (but not Reservour Dogs cause that ones gay and not Kill Bill cause they don’t care about women and they’ve probably never even heard of Jackie Brown) and won’t stop telling you about Pulp Fiction at a party.

Which I have admittedly met a lot of guys like that.

I'm not a big fan of Tarantino, but I fucking LOVE "Jackie Brown" with "Reservoir Dogs" not far behind.

I can kind of see why "Jackie Brown" might not be tops in a Tarantino fan's list because it's based on an Elmore Leonard novel ("Rum Punch," which is a pretty good novel on its own) and it kind of shows because tonally "Jackie Brown" is a little off-the-beam for typical Tarantino. I mean, it's so far off that I often forget he wrote and directed "Jackie Brown."

But a self-proclaimed Tarantino fan who doesn't like "Reservoir Dogs" and "Kill Bill"? Yeah, I side-eye that.

Tyler Durden is probably number 1 on the list. In recent years it’s definitely become Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty because R&M fans are on another level.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-17 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Tyler Durden is my favorite example because he's very clearly not even the hero of the movie that he's in

(Anonymous) 2019-01-17 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
He’s not at all but he appeals to the mindset of people who think they’re smarter than they actually are and is how you get idiotic dudebros screaming about special and unique snowflakes as if they’re not just as conformist as the people in fight club. It’s not like Fight Club is even all that smart of a movie but it somehow attracts pretentiousness.

I love Rick and Morty. I think I need an "every fandom has its jerks and crazies" button on my keyboard.

Nah, it's not being a fan of the show that's a red flag (I think it's great), it's specifically the fans who go "Rick is a great human being, and anyone who criticizes his actions just isn't smart enough to appreciate him like I do."

Humbert Humbert, surely?
greghousesgf: (Nut House)

[personal profile] greghousesgf 2019-01-17 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
definitely, yeah!

(Anonymous) 2019-01-17 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Do people actually identify with Humbert?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-17 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
There certainly are people out there, in 2019, who think Humbert Humbert is relatable and that his actions are excusable. However, I think those people are a distinct minority, and even the people who think that tend to know they probably shouldn't share that opinion around too much.

Howard Roark from The Fountainhead, and most of the "good guy" characters from Atlas Shrugged. Tbh, I enjoy the fuck out of both those books, and I like Ayn Rand's characters. But I can 100% understand why liking them is considered a warning sign. Her ideology was...interesting, but ultimately profoundly wrong about a lot of stuff, and her characters are very much representations of her ideology. Plus, Howard Roark has "rape by tacit consent"* with the main love interest, so there's that.

*quoting Rand here.

[personal profile] greghousesgf 2019-01-17 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not keen on Ayn Rand at all.

Walter White is definitely one, although that era has sort of passed

Breaking Bad is incredible filmmaking but anyone who thinks Walter was cool or justified or even "wellllllll he was doing it for his faaaaaamily" and not 100% for his own ego, I side-eye either their entire personality, or at least their viewing comprehension

also TEE BEE AITCH, Greg House a little bit lmao, although that show peaked sort of before the phenomenon really crystalized, and it never really had that kind of crazy dudebro fanbase afaict (other kinds of crazy, yes!!! but the show was really relentless about the downsides of House being House, for everyone else and also for him.)

(Anonymous) 2019-01-17 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
as someone who loves Breaking Bad, I hate the Walter fanboys/anti-Skyler fanboys so much, and I'm one of those people who felt sympathy for Walt til the very end. his actions simply aren't justifiable, that's part of the tragedy of watching the show.

no offense taken, in fact one of the things that really pissed me off about S4-8 is they seemed intent on taking away all his sympathetic qualities and turning him into this total psycho. By that time I was just watching because I want to have sex with Hugh Laurie about 15 million times.

One that I see mentioned a lot in my corner of the internet is Rorschach from Watchmen
