@midnight was essentially a panel show, wasn't it?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
OP said decent panel show, though.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
From what I recall, the only real problem with @midnight was the host.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't find it very funny in general.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Technically yes but IMO, it was never as funny as the popular British panel shows are. For some reason, everyone talks as though they think the audience is slightly deaf so there's this shouty, loud-talking vibe where people are trying to get their jokes in and it feels more desperate than funny.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like that's going to be a high risk in any American attempt at a panel show to be honest

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
What is, the talking loudly? I don't see why. I don't buy into cultural stereotypes about Americans being louder as a people. This is TV, people are quite used to the concept of needing to take turns in order to speak, and if they're not familiar with that, that's what producers and directors are for.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think it might be true of American stand up comedy even if it's not true of Americans generally

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
This sounds relevant to my interests but I'm hesitant about it because I can't stand Katherine Ryan.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it's Jimmy Carr. Katherine Ryan and DL Hughley aren't great; Jimmy Carr is awful and I don't understand how he has any career. Can't stand him.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I neither like nor dislike Jimmy Carr. I find him way too bland and inoffensive to feel anything about him at all.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I think he's a good host - he thinks very quickly on his feet and knows how to direct discussions and keep a show moving, which is a whole other skill set.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I actually agree that he's good at the mechanics of hosting a show! But every joke he makes... it's not just that they're unfunny jokes; they're so unfunny that they make the jokes around them less funny as well. And it feels like he doesn't have great chemistry with anyone either.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Different strokes. I think he's one of the funniest working comedians today and his interaction with panel show guests is usually pretty good.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I hate his laugh. It's the most annoying thing I've ever heard.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I have always lowkey wondered if he's faking it or at least exaggerating it a little.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
He's been asked that before and brought up a good point - if he was faking it, why would he choose to sound like THAT?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-18 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
So it is unique and memorable? Because if one of his jokes doesn't land at least he could make people laugh at his laugh? Idk, sometimes people just do weird stuff.

Yeah, this show probably isn't for you, then.
