What is the worst place you have ever visited?

but probably because it was during the worst vacation in my whole life--two weeks stuck with a bunch of crazies who pulled an incredible amount of shit and visiting a Cristian-right wing-royalist propaganda theme park was only a small part of the whole deal.

I have no idea about any of this but I do have to say, a theme park training birds to pick up trash is wild as hell

I really can't think of one? Like... I wracked my brain thinking of all the places I've been, and everything had good points, and I never really had a 'ruined' vacation or anything (even that time my grandma died and my flight got cancelled because of a storm).

I'm sure it's fine if you actually do live there, but Salt Lake City is definitely the place that I've been that I would least like to live in. Just seemed like miles and miles of suburban desert to me.

Salt Lake City is probably the ugliest city I've ever been to. And that's really saying something, since I travel all over for work and I've been to a LOT of really fucking ugly cities. There's a lot of really beautiful cities in the west (Reno is a personal favorite of mine, as is some of the outlying areas of Phoenix), but Salt Lake is not one of them.

I didn't like New Orleans at all. It was trashy and unbearably hot and kind of looked like a third world country on the outskirts. And everyone working in the retail and service industry were total assholes to me by default - kind of what I imagine France must be like. E.g. I walked into a shoe store in the French Quarter, and the clerk greeted me by insulting the shoes I was wearing. Either that or they were nauseatingly obsequious. I'm glad I visited, and I loved the food and the market and the architecture, but I won't go back.

Pisa is another place where the people are assholes. I totally see why the Florentines brag about pissing in the Arno so it goes downstream to the Pisans.

Does prison count? Because the immigration detention centers I've been in would probably be the worst place. Glad I don't have to live there, and I feel bad for those who have to.

I agree that they're inhumane. What would be your solution to dealing with people who attempt to enter the US illegally?

Well that escalated quickly.

It's a terrible question. I don't think there's any way to answer it, as framed. Like, we can disagree about immigration policy all we want, that's one thing. But even if you believe that we need to detain people who try to immigrate unlawfully, to admit that it's inhumane and then imply that it's necessary - to imply that we have no other choice but to be inhumane - is just... evil. I don't think there's any other good word for it.

This is a bit extreme. AYRT is agreeing that detention centres are wrong and is attempting a civil conversation on the issues with illegal entry to a country. Maybe dial it down a notch?

I have a lot of thoughts on immigration and "illegal" immigration and our ridiculously restrictive immigration laws (for example, we've scared off most immigrants who aren't fleeing violence and horrifying things, so most of them should be allowed to stay and get asylum). But whatever the case, detaining is not the solution.

It used to be that you could only detain indefinately if immigrants were a danger to society. Now they can detain anyone who is arriving indefinitely without any bond. That's ridiculous. Detain the people with felony records, fine. You should still hold a hearing because prison without due process is unconstitutional. But don't keep the people who are not a risk to anyone in detention just because they don't have immigration status. Entering this country is not a crime (it really isn't, only reentry is a crime).

I agree with you that it shouldn't be a detainable offence. But I believe it is illegal to cross the border at an undesignated place or time, isn't it?

I've driven through it but never stopped. I always associate it with the West Memphis Three situation.

Houston...and Texas in general, really. Ugly cities, horrible traffic and roads, too fucking hot, obnoxious nouveau riche houses and the politics.

But at least the bbq is tasty.

Ah, Houston... the asshole of Texas. I've been all over the state and Houston easily has the worst roads, it's a real horror show. And the heat + humidity combo is pure suffering.

Honestly, none. I was surprised by how gross Paris was, but then I remembered it was a big city and would likely have similar issues that other big cities had. I was fine once I got over it, had a lovely time, and didn't encounter anybody rude.

My gut answer is the town next door on their parade day. All towns near me have children's days where they choose a queen and various 'champions' 'nights', ladies in waiting', fairies, 'bower girls' ect that form a parade and then bands and floats like the macey parade have but smaller take part. These used to be held on the day in June that miners had off. It means a lot to each town. Now Next Town's (NT) is on the last day of school for my town (we are diff counties and we go to school that Friday because we didn't on our fair day which is a Tuesday). Many of us skip the last day of term and it never counts as absence as you are dragged to church and many parents are like 'um no'. One year my friends and I , wanting to enjoy NT's parade, got on the bus and went down. Every time we spoke we were glared at. Then when we spoke enough around a group of youths they pinned we were from my town and physically escorted us back to the bus stop and made us come home. So, that was a horrific experience. There is far less animosity now but before I was born folk from each town would meet in the fields between to fight so....it has always been a shitshow aha
