What do you own that sparks joy?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not just like...actual joy. I'm not sure anything I own makes me feel that way, tbh.

I did the konmari thing when I read her book some five years ago. I can't say I found a lot of thing that ~sparked joy~, but I definitely could tell the difference between the things I wanted to keep, and the things I just had lying around just in case.

This is how it was for me too. It definitely got easier as I worked through things, but \i was surprised at how little I had that actually sparked joy.

Do I own my cat or does she own me? Either way, she gives me all the joy.

Doctor Who, LOTR, Babylon 5, Lion King, How to Train Your Dragon, and Star Wars dvds. My fantasy book collection, particularly any Tolkien thing.

Ditto on the Tolkien. Which is odd, when you consider how objectively depressing the canon is, and what he was doing when he first started writing it.

For me at least, what sets Tolkien apart from other depressing books is hope. Yes, things get dark in his stuff. Really dark. But there is always a thread of hope. Heroes always exist. People resist evil. People do good things. And to me that gives me joy because hope is what I try to cling to. The world gets pretty dark too. I like the idea of hope. I don't always have it, but I want it. And Tolkien gives me that.

Idk if I'd classify it as joy, but I have a few mementos I would never part with like the nightlight I used when I was little, the bracelet my grandmother wore for her wedding, the costumes from my high school plays...

Lots of things! I like my bed. It's comfy. I like my blanket. I'm wrapped in it right now. I like my bathtub. It's nice and warm. I like my pillows. They're fluffy. I like this cup I'm using, I've had it for years and it cost me 25 cents. I like these speakers for my computer, they're way better than the ones I had. Ditto mousepad. I like these little gifts my friends bought me that are on my shelves.

Maybe I'm just a happy person? I like everything I use and see and have around me. If I they didn't bring me joy in some capacity, I wouldn't have them.

I didn't know this was so rare.

SA

I use the word "like" there a lot, but I do mean small amounts of joy when I think about them, not just satisfaction or acceptance.

These are my things! I like my things! I have joy in having found things I really and they are mine!

Re: What do you own that sparks joy?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
This is a nice comment, anon! I feel similarly. I'm not sure I'd use the word "joy" about my things, but a lot of my things bring me real pleasure.

For me, part of it is that I grew up fairly poor, and was a depressed lump through a lot of my teens when I could've theoretically had a job and been less poor. So for most of my life, almost everything I had was cheap and/or used, and having to buy things was a source of anxiety for me/my parents.

Now that I have a bit more disposable income, it's unbelievably nice to be able to just buy myself things because they're nice and I like them.

Re: What do you own that sparks joy?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I get a lot of joy out of the thought that I like things I own. It's more than only being satisfied with something, better than "oh, this will do." I don't like shopping, and I don't like or desire many things, so when I do find something I like, and I obtain it, it's like yes! This is a nice blanket. This is the blanket I have wanted. And now I have it, and it is fluffy. Of all the blah boring blankets in the world I have no interest in, I ran into this one which I actually liked a lot, and it is mine! For the long-ass foreseeable future, I no longer have to think about blankets or try to search for something I like.

My boots bring me joy! I have exactly one pair that I have worn almost daily for almost six years. My search for boots was over when I found them. When they wear out, I'll buy another pair of the exact same kind from the same brand from the same store, or something as similar as possible. I have small joy every time I put them on in the morning, because of all the boots in the world, I have found mine.

Maybe I just really hate shopping

Re: What do you own that sparks joy?

We are very different in this regard. I love shopping, and I love having lots of stuff. I never love an object so much that I don't want alternative versions of it. (Except one stuffed animal I own which is the only stuffed animal I want.)

However, we're somewhat similar in that I have a strong sense of what I like, and what I want, and I won't just get any old version of something.

I'm with you, anon - fuck shopping, it is the worst. When i find a thing that is exactly what i want and works 100 percent like i want it to, i will keep it for *decades*. I own a dress that is 35 years old. I wear it every summer, I *love* it.

So - yeah. :D

I wouldn't say it's rare, I just think a lot of people have a lot more stuff than they really need or care about. I pared down my belongings by a TON and now I can truly say that the things I do own bring me joy because I got rid of all of the stuff I wasn't actually using or didn't care about anymore. Before I decluttered, I had a lot of things that had brought me joy when I first got them, but over the years my interest in them had waned and eventually they'd stopped mattering to me. I just hung onto them because they'd meant something to me once and I realize now that that's how you end up with clutter.

Re: What do you own that sparks joy?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I grew up pretty much only having hand me downs and secondhand stuff, and still don’t have much disposable income, so a lot of my clutter is “well those old shirts go in the rag bag now,” or “I don’t really like these sheets anymore but they’re my only spares,” or even “damn I wish I had a spare $100 to get this old furniture hauled away.”

I wish I could afford to just get rid of my falling apart and unfashionable and ill-fitting stuff and replace it all with things that “spark joy,” instead of just keeping things that are necessary or potentially useful.

Re: What do you own that sparks joy?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think an object could ever bring me actual joy unless it was a symbol of something else.

A winning lottery ticket could bring me joy, but only because it's a symbol of freedom from poverty and drudgery.

I don't actually want to get married, but in theory, a wedding ring could bring me joy because it would be a symbol of my love for my partner and their love for me.

I have a dear, tattered stuffed animal that brings me joy, because over the years it's become a symbol of my father's love for me. But it also brings me sorrow, sometimes, because I know I'm going to have to live without him one day.

However, tons of things I own bring me pleasure, which is plenty good enough for me.

My nail stuff (polishes, wraps, polish strips). My dog (I love her so much!). My jewelry.

Re: What do you own that sparks joy?

As a former nail polish collector, do you have a favorite color or colors? Favorite brand?

A few years ago I grew my nails out and did this with them (it's ok if you think this shape is ugly, I won't be offended):

https://66.media.tumblr.com/623662de89b98785534551e105f9d79f/tumblr_n5dutiX0Zq1t23ppvo2_1280.jpg

Then I went back to biting them, and now they look like utter crap. :(

My absolute favorites are the old Hard Candy and Urban Decay polishes from the 1990s, I've got quite a few of those and cherish them. I love Cirque Colors, Londontown, J. Hannah, Smith & Cult, Base Coat, Pa Nail, and Pacifica brands of polish. I like Incoco Korea's polish strips and NCLA's nail wraps. As for favorite colors, anything turquoise, green, black! And I LOVE glitter in every color! Currently wearing a lavender glitter polish strip by Incoco called ~Lavender Allure~, lol!

Your nails look FABULOUS in that pic! I love that shape and wish I could do it myself but alas, I have wide, fan-shaped nails and they look better when they're rounded. :/

My houseplants definitely bring me joy. So do some of my clothes and costume items. But I definitely have too many clothes and could probably stand to get rid of some. The dilemma s that my work clothes definitely do NOT bring me joy, but, ya know. Gotta go to work.
