Does anyone here like soy milk?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I am trying it instead of almond milk because it is more ethical. But...holy shit it is gross. It takes like....really vanilla mixed with gross chemicals.

I prefer the semi-sweetened almond milk, but I've only really been able to like chocolate soy milk.

I'm not a fan honestly, I find it too sweet. I prefer oat milk generally (try it if you haven't!) but it doesn't work in every recipe unfortunately.

No, sorry. I loathe pretty much all soy-based dairy substitutes. For me the biggest issue is texture. It's just so...not gritty, but, like there's really finely milled sawdust in it or something. IDEK, but it's gross.

What about coconut milk? Is it any more ethical/eco friendly? I don't know much about the dairy substitutes industry, but coconut milk is pretty good IMO.

The taste varies between brands. Some taste like a fairly bland and thin dairy milk. The long life ones are always foul and sometimes sludgy. If it's not in the fridge with a shorter use by date, avoid it.

I like it. I don't like the vanilla flavored ones though.

I've had more luck with Asian brands. I think soy milk has a longer commercial history there than here, idk. Kikkoman's Pearl Green Tea Soymilk is my favorite.

Why am I surprised that Kikkoman makes soy milk.

I mean, considering soy sauce and soymilk are from soybeans, I shouldn't be. I bet I could find that at an Asian market.

I'd rather drink soy milk than milk from cows.

it tastes better to me!

Honestly, the reason I don't like it is how much it tastes like actual milk. I really hate the taste of milk. Don't mind it in baked things where I can't taste it. But I don't use it for cereal or coffee or anything like that because the taste grosses me out.

I was raised on whole milk, so it's difficult to drink anything that claims to be milk but doesn't also have the fat content of bacon.

I heard rice milk is supposed to be fairly neutral.

Rice Dream brand vanilla rice milk is tasty but no matter how much I shake the carton it never gets as frothy as their soy milk.

Vanilla soy mild isn't bad at all. I like Rice Dream brand. Nice and frothy.

Why is almond milk unethical?
Seems i've read a few things about soy products not being all that good for you, but who knows. Everything is good or bad in cycles.

Maybe try rice milk, or if you have some organic/farmers market access, goat milk?

Which brand? I’ve had some I enjoy and some I can’t stand, it really depends.

Soy milk is disgusting. I use coconut milk.

Get on the oat milk train. Silk’s Oat Yeah is rich, creamy, and gentle on the water supply. I don’t actually care about ethics, I use what tastes good. I dropped almond milk for Oat Yeah. The downside is it’s pricey, but if enough people buy it, store brands will start undercutting them with their own.

I also get the weird, chemically taste off soy milk, to the point that I wonder if it's a genetic thing like the "cilantro: does it taste like soap?" thing.

Also, I probably should limit my soy intake anyway since I'm prone to uterine fibroids and it's an estrogen mimic.

Coconut milk's good and hemp milk's alright.

I don't like soy milk at all. Almond milk is okay and so is rice and I say that as someone who actually likes cow milk. Other alternatives I've seen include coconut, macadamia, cashew, hemp, oat, 7-grain, sunflower, sesame, potato, flax, and quinoa. But I don't know how available they are, but since they are pretty shelf stable, you could order online.

I like Silk chocolate soy milk. I don't think it's good for you...

Re: Does anyone here like soy milk?

All the non-dairy milks I've tried are okay to me, but I don't like them as much as cow's milk, which is why when I decided to consume less dairy, I just stopped buying milk without replacing it with anything. I don't see the point in spending more just for a beverage or something to have with cereal. I don't eat much cold cereal anyway, and why drink milk at all when you could just have water? I still buy cow's milk if it's called for in a recipe (in baking, the recipe might rely on the acidity of milk to activate baking soda or something, and you won't get that acidity from non-dairy milk and you'll have to add it somehow) and I still buy real half and half, because there is no such thing as a good non-dairy creamer (and it really needs to be regular-pasteurized half and half, not ultra-pasturized).

I like it! Much more than almond milk. I recommend buying it unsweetened, I find the sweetened stuff pretty gross becajse of the flavour combo, but unsweetened is mild enough flavoured that I'm fine with it in tea and coffee.

This may be Australia-centric, but my understanding was that the best soy brand was Bonsoy (haven't tried it myseld though).

Nope. Personally I prefer spelt or oats milk. Not as many nutrients in those though I'm afraid?
