WTF series did you read? Neville was brave from the very first book (he won points for it!), and he remained a dork to the end. A brave, strong, kickass dork.

He grew up (which, you know, kids do), but I thought he still remained pretty comparably dorky next to most of the other students.

While I don't begrudge him his points...I always was irritated by it since it felt like Dumbledore was just reaching for some reason to give Gryffindor a few more points so they'd win. Like...if they had had more points, he wouldn't have bothered to point Neville out and reward him at all.

You think so? I think Dumbledore would have rewarded him regardless. He always valued the underdogs and misfits.

It's been a while since I've read the book/seen the movie so maybe if I saw/read it again my impression would change but that's really how I felt when I first got to it. Like, "oh how convenient for him."

Yeah, I feel that way, too. I didn't really think about that much at first, but when Gryffindor just *kept winning* it was like....hrmmmmmmmmm....

I really side-eyed Dumbledore from book one on, though, so....

...Really? I see Dumbledore as more like Slughorn than he'd admit, misfits and underdogs are more useful to him if they're on the outskirts of society (like Lupin or Hagrid), but that's not a soft spot for them, it's a manipulation technique.

That's pretty stupid, since it's not like there's any set point value for something like keeping major magical artifacts from the hands of undead wizards. Dumbledore could quite easily have added those same points to Harry, Ron, and Hermione's scores in some combination, and no one would have batted an eye. He pointed out Neville because Neville did something worth pointing out, and rewarding him last and giving him the points needed to tip the victory in Gryffindor's favour was the best way to shine a light on that.
