Eh, what's the harm? If they're tagging poorly they should tag better, I guess, but other than that, who cares.

I agree, But they're allowed to be annoyed.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but does something have to be harmful before it's okay for people to find it annoying? I dropped my toast butter side down this morning. No real harm done, and hey, 30 second rule even though there was definitely carpet fuzz on it. But I still hate it when that happens.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
IDK. Obviously, there's no objective definition for how annoyed OP is, or how annoyed OP is allowed to be. But there were at least annoyed enough to make a secret about it, and my reaction to that secret is that I don't think it's that annoying. A lot of people like it, it's clearly meaningful to them, and good for them. That's my response to the secret so that's the comment I made.

It wouldn't be annoying if people under those pages treat them like is canon and you're [insert thing]phobic if you disagree (IE: A post "Sailor Neptune and Uranus hate terfs and you're a terf if you disagree").

I'm LGBT+ and it annoys me because of how rarely they specify that it's a headcanon. Now if somebody got a collection of "here's actual bi characters, actual trans characters, etc." then I would be happy because then I can go find media with that.

It's really annoying to try and consume media to see LGBT+ characters people claim "are totally canon gay" when they're.... not.

Clearly OP does. If you don't, then bully for you, but I'm not sure why you'd expect OP to conform to your standards for what's annoying and what isn't.

Eh, I agree it's annoying OP and I have a tendency to roll my eyes and scroll.

But...

It seems that a lot of people with "queer" head canons tend to be young-ish. It might be a case of them trying to figure out their sexuality, or it could be a case that they're afraid of sex itself (and god knows, there are plenty of places in the U.S. that do their best to scare the SHIT out of the young-uns on that score rather than, y'know, giving them facts).

I find, in general, the people who put out these head canon to feel like speshul snowflakes are a really tiny minority. Most of them are just scared adolescents who are trying to figure shit out and are using the prism of fandom to do it.

I mean, the drive to make 'em isn't much different than some writers of slash fanfic back in the day. I remember there was a shit-ton of people who used that method to puzzle out where they were on the Kinsey scale or because they wanted to create a space that reflected their reality (because god knows pop culture wasn't doing it).

So, tl;dr...yes it's annoying, but on the other hand, I understand why it exists. So I'm just going to roll my eyes and scroll on.

They're mildly annoying to see but ultimately I just scroll by and leave them to it yanno? I also don't frequent general tags all that much anyway so I don't see this kind of thing often.

I get young people making queer headcanons for characters. I don't even find that annoying myself.

What I think this secret is about, though, is a type of blog that's cropped up recently, bacisally "your favorite character is [something]," and they take submissions (of characters) and make posts saying that character is whatever identity the blog is about. Now usually superimposed on some made-up pride flag parody.

I hate them because I'm tired of people appropriating my identity to look woke.

Question: How do you know the difference between a "I truly believe [x] is [y]" post and a "I am posting that [x] is [y] because I want to be seen as open minded!" post?

Is the background for this secret an actual new flag or is just an aesthetically pleasing collection of colours?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
agree, it's an annoying trend. hopefully it'll die when the current group of teens/tweens propagating it grow up.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I hate those "Your fave is". They're so boring and have no thought or effort put into them. You don't learn anything, it's not appealing to look at, it's not entertaining or amusing. It's just... nothing but a flag.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought the point was so you could go through and reblog/retweet which ever specific characters you liked? Not, like, something that was supposed to be independently interesting?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking this earlier today. I saw like seven hundred "your favorite character hates x/y/z" or "your favorite show is a/b/c" flag posts and i'm like, yes that's fine, but also can we find a way to tag them so they're not clogging up everything so it's so omnipresent???

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I just block them. If it's actual canon, I don't mind so much. But these days it's so hard to tell headcanons from actual LGBT+ characters that it' gets in the way of me consuming media.

I don't care if in your mind you think she's the biggest lesbian ever, she's happily married to a guy and that does not count as lesbian rep, and I'm going to be freaking pissed if I get recced stuff which is "totally gay" but only has straight characters doing straight things.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
thiiiiiiis. idgaf about your headcanon, i want actual canon lgbt characters.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
I can't stand the flags. (Not directly related to the secret.) I identify as bi, but ALL the flags are silly.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-07 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed! There's a popular fan artist in my fandom who posts tonnes of crappy looks-like-it-was-made-in-Microsoft-Paint fan art of characters wearing pride flags and every single one gets so many notes. She's so persistent and it's so BORING. I don't have anything against pride flags, or shitty art for that matter, but the tumblr crowd will literally reblog anything with a pride flag slapped on it *eye roll*

(Anonymous) 2019-02-09 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
All the flag posts like that, no matter what they are, are dumb.
