I fizzled out after season 1 but both main actors are ridiculously beautiful. I tried reading book 1 and thought it was kinda terrible, the show was definitely better, imo.

That's very sweet of you.

I only have a passing interest in football, but I watched the Super Bowl so I could talk to my dad about it, since he enjoys football (well, sometimes he just really seems to enjoy complaining about football).

I'm the opposite of you. I always assumed I wouldn't like Outlander, but a few months ago I started watching it and ended up feeling that I'd completely misjudged it. I think it's really good.

Good for you for wanting to be there for your friend and not harsh her squee. Even so, I feel like the happy medium in your case would be to be honest with your friend that it's not really your cup of tea, but also show her that you're still open to letting her talk about it with you.

I checked out the book and watched some of the first season and just couldn't get into it, which disappointed me because I usually love isekai and time-travel stories. Also I found the fanfic scene really pathetic, though that might be because the author is a frothing lunatic...

You seem like a very good friend.

Awwww, this is sweet tbh. I hope you have some enjoyable discussions about it OP even if it's not to your tastes. :)

I kinda tried to read the Lord John books and it's been years, so it might have changed by now but I got so annoyed by him not being allowed to.move.fucking.on. from being in love with Jamie.

Everyone must love the main characters (or at least lust after them).

No-one may ever, E V E R get over them.

ever~

Yeah. I like the series more than Outlander, but it also suffers a little bit from the author's obsession with Jamie. He's Gabaldon's Edward Cullen, basically.

I haven't read the books, but oh man, I love John Gray and I want only good things for him. I ship John Gray/Happiness so much.

I was pleased he at least got a moment of supreme basassery at the end of S3. If his poor heart refuses to stop loving Jamie, at least he got to demonstrate his power and competence in front of Jamie in order to save his life. And going by Jamie's face in that scene, I think John's supreme basassery was very much recognized and admired.

This secret made my heart swell. I think you are a very kind person and a good friend to give your friend a safe place to squee.

I can't do this show. I watched season 1. The husband was treated pretty terribly, and i have a hard time rooting for an affair as "true love." Yes, she had to marry him while she was in the past. But she didn't have to stay in the past. She didn't have to treat her husband so badly.

Agreed. Very much.

OP, you are a true friend. That's really sweet of you to do, and I hope your friend gives you a place to squee whenever you have a thing you've got no one else to squee to.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-08 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
This is so sweet of you! I'm also watching Outlander, because my friend adores it, but is's so terrible! So terrible that at some point it becomes something like comedy.
The only thing I loved was the story of a girl from 1960ies. I wish we Knew more abour her

(Anonymous) 2019-02-08 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
What do you find bad about it?

I can't say I agree about the series. I find it good. Surprisingly and refreshingly good, even.

But you're kind to put up with something you don't enjoy for the sake of your friend. But make sure you don't end up feeling too put-upon over it. You don't want to end up resenting your friend for her enthusiasm because you've gotten yourself into a situation where you feel obligated to cater to it.

Honestly, I didn't even start because the books are such a mess. Has anyone read the series AND watched this? How does it compare?

aw, you're a very nice person.

I actually do like the show, better than the books, even.
