I always hope for tumblr's latest pet "we stan a queen" celebrity to do something a teensy bit problematic so I can watch them switch from worshipping her to wanting her dead in the blink of an eye. I love them exposing themselves as the perfectionist demons they are. Marie Kondo, I'm counting on you now!

Lol Marie Kondo has been called ableist on Tumblr for advocating people throwing out clutter because "Some people? Hoard stuff? Because they're mentally ill?" and its literally the dumbest thing ever.

My house is usually a mess due to my chronic pain, but her tips could help someone like me streamline the cleaning process a little. Not the same thing as hoarding issues, I know, but it should go without saying that most help isn't everyone's solution and that doesn't automatically mean ABLEISM.

All of the Marie Kondo is insane and it's also great because it's insane from so many different directions. Any possible terrible take you can imagine, someone has made. It's unbelievable how deep it goes for something that's fundamentally so insignificant.

I would think the more problematic thing would be when she tells people to go through all their clothes at once and she says you should do it on your own. I guess most of her clients are able-bodied, but that isn't a thing I can physically do. I've been cleaning out my wardrobe for months and I'm still not done. I need to wait for other people to lift things for me and help me fold things.

The fuck is problematic about that? If you can't do it a certain way then modify it or don't do it.

?
I was commenting on what I was surprised the tumblr SJWs didn't pick up on. You know. An actual thing that she offers no alternative solutions on in her series, rather than the idea that hoarding (which is bad - causes health and fire risks) is fine and shouldn't be criticised because they don't think any unhealthy behaviour that can be attributed to a mental illness should be "fixed".

There are cleaning resources that aren't Marie Kondo related that offer good ideas for how to clean your space if you're depressed or have physical limitations. I think there are more productive ways to discuss ableism but screeching because you feel judged for being a hoarder isn't one of them.

I assumed the you should do it on your own part is so that other people can't tell you what you should and shouldn't keep. Which rang true for me since I had dozens of failed attempts at decluttering because my mum would spot something I don't want and insist that I keep it.

Yeah. It makes sense not to do it with family or people who have strong ideas about what's best for you. I think a neutral party like a carer or organiser wouldn't cause the same issues though.

The poor woman seems to be getting plenty of goddamn heat for making an other wise innocuous-looking cleaning show. You'd think she'd told people to burn their pets from the way I've seen people reacting.

Right? Damn ya'll. Some things listed like the comments above make sense that adjustments need to be made but my god.

I don't watch her show but a couple of friends of mine really flipped out over her saying you should only have 50 books or however many it was. I don't think it's great advice either, at least not for most people, but all you have to do is... not listen to her.

Actually, the number in question was 30, and Kondo had to clarify that that was a ballpark figure.

Honestly, as someone who LOVES books, I don't think it's bad advice at all. It's so overwhelmingly easy to keep things 'just because'. I recently went through mine and donated about 200 books to Value Village because I'd read them and knew I would never read them again and wanted someone else to have the chance to read them. She's ballparking that figure because let's be realistic, most people (in general, I think FS is skewed towards those who probably do) don't buy a lot of books, nor do they reread them, so it makes sense to pare that down to those books that have sentimental/emotional value, or ones you reread on a regular basis.

But you're right, if one disagrees with her philosophy, it's pretty fucking easy to just... not follow it.

/sigh Oh, tumblr... And you know, I get it because I, too, am bad at throwing things away for mental health reasons. I'm not a full on hoarder but I definitely hold onto way too much stuff. My impatience with tumblr is that they overreact to people even suggesting that something isn't healthy like it's a personal attack. Pointing to a manifestation of mental illness and suggesting that it's not good isn't ableist, ffs.
