I had a college acquaintance who, at age 20, was so adamantly childfree she had surgery done to ensure she couldn't get pregnant. And she was absolutely outraged that a number of doctors refused to do it for her.

I don't know what she's up to today and I hope she's happy. If she still doesn't want kids, power to her. But I really can't blame doctors who are hesitant to do that kind of thing for someone so young.

Isn't this often, like, an endo thing?

The thing is, doctors get so hesitant about it, they refuse to do the surgeries on people that need them for medical reasons. I was only recently able to get the hysterectomy that I needed because doctors kept not believing me about my pain and also believing that I needed to be physically able to have kids and that the ability to have kids trumped everything else medically.

Ugh I'm so sorry you had to deal with that, but hurray for getting it done finally, yes?

Sexism in medical treatment enrages me to no end.

I can. The patient signs a release saying they won't sue or whatever. It's not the doctor's job to preserve my freaking uterus for some random, possible future child.

Doctors aren't some kind of contractors where you can just order up surgeries because you want them and not because you medically need them. I don't get to go in and sign a waiver and tell my doctor to amputate my legs because I don't foresee myself ever wanting to walk again.

Having your boobs made bigger or your butt lifted isn't necessary or even safe (as no operation is 100 percent safe), but those surgeries are 'ordered up' all the time.

Why not remove a part of my anatomy that causes me monthly pain and illness and is not necessary for my continued good health or good mental health?

NAYRT—this, holy shit. I’m terrified of ever needing surgery because it’s that or die, but no one can tell me a boob job or facelift is nbd and then flip out that someone wants their uterus and ovaries removed. And I want kids but am extremely unlikely to ever be in a position to have them, but like fuck am I ever gonna aim my sadness about it at (current or former) childfree people.

Hell, I get enough shit for saying I’m not up for caring for kids by myself so I won’t have them, as though it’s more important that I have kids than that I be able to take good care of them. Why the fuck should people who don’t even want kids in the first place be pressured into having them? Their decisions to stay childfree aren’t hurting anyone, but if they had kids despite not wanting them it’d hurt them and their kids both.

Everything. All of this. It boggles my mind that decisions I make about my body re: sexing it up are FINE, but get rid of a uterus i'm /am never going to use? OMG NO ELECTIVE SURGERY OMG!!!!!

Fuck that noise.

I have had three major surgeries where I was anesthetized, and i had no issues or complications. I know me /= everyone, but unless you have an underlying issue that would complicate it, don't let that be a barrier to your good health.
