As a (reluctant) Texan, I mostly agree, though I'd argue Florida and Alabama are also pretty bad.

That's not a fair comparison, though. There's "Put down the tequila, and get off the table, Grandma" and then there's "For fuck's sake, you went off your medication again, didn't you, Grandma?" Florida's permanently in the second camp.

As a native Floridian who has lived in this festering garbage-fire of a state (and near the Alabama line, no less) for most of her life and has never been to Texas, I know I'm more than a little biased here, but I still think that Texas would have to work pretty hard to out-tacky Panama City alone.

There is a very prominent and deep strain of tackiness in American culture but tbh that's one of the better and more charming and defensible parts of American culture to me

Hah! I like this comment, and I agree.

I think there's a tendency to conflate the tackiness of (some parts of) American culture, with other, less harmless and defensible parts of American culture. So the tackiness ends up seeming awful to some people, because in their minds it's come to symbolize a lot of other shit that it's not actually inherently related to at all.

That's my take, anyway, as a non-American.
